of the ninehorse field ear Cherry says he likes Rockies DENVER AP Don Cherry who coached Boston Bruins to seventh game against Montreal Canadiens in National Hockey League semifinal playoff this year sounded dead serious He was talking about the possibility of coaching Colorado Rockies the most losing club in the NHL last season like the city Cherry said in telephone interview reported in Sundays Rocky Mountain News know theyve got good fans out there and they went through lot last year with only 15 wins Schandlen joins Leafs protest pitcher move By GARRY FORBES Of The Examiner Two SouthSimcoe Baseball League teams are embroiled in battle to secure the services of pitcherfielder Dave Schandlen and if the rules prevail the young Thornton native will probably play in another league Schandlen wants to play for the Barrie Red Sox he made his second appearance for the club Sunday and manager Ray Neely says hes more than welcome The happy union wont last long however if the Ivy Leafs have their way The Leafs quoting from the Ontario Baseball Association rulebook claim Schandlen and say that if he is going to play in the South Simcoe league it will have to be with Ivy The OBAs residence rule states that players must join the club nearest their home which for Schandlen is Ivy unless the club gives them release to play elsewhere Leafs manager George Ellis says his team has not released Schandlen and the Red Sox could be in lot of trouble for using the player Schandlen who played for the Leafs two years ago has already signed with Ivy Rangers of the NorthDufferin Baseball League the team he played for last year If everything goes as lanned he will play for both Rangers and the Red Sox this season But theres no way he said he will play for Ellis squad Its all up to the league Schandlen said Ill play for Barrie until the league says cant If they stop me they stop But just got feeling about Denver know the players are the type that never quit and like that he said from his home in North Andover Mass Rockies general manager Ray Miron has talked to Cherry about joining Denver He isnt the only one interested in ac quiring the services of the coach who took the Bruins to the Stanley Cup finals twice in the last six years Buffalo Sabres Toronto Maple Leafs and Atlanta Flames all have expressed an interest in Cherry Im considering Denver just me Ill just go back to the Rangers But wont play for the Leafs In Ellis view Schandlens returning to the NorthDufferin league as Ranger is preferable to his playing in Barrie Hes played all his baseball in Ivy right up through the minor system and we cant understand why he wants to switch and play against us said Ellis We want him on the Leafs we want him to know he has place to play in Ivy Were just going by the OBA bylaws and either he plays for the Leafs or he doesnt play in the SouthSimcoe league Pitcher Jerry Grasmeyer member of last years Leafs is also seeking spot on the Red Sox Grasmeyer played for Barrie in preseason game on ly and like Schandlen plans to like the three others said Cherry Ive got to get my head straightened around STAY IN COACHING Cherry said he intends to stay in coaching and not move into management Oh no Im too young to get general managers job he said laughing have too much fun coaching Theres too much notoriety in it Rockies coach Pat Kelly departed the floundering club at midseason and scouting ex ecutive Aldo Guidolin took over the coaching job for the re mainder of the season spend the season in different league is ruled back to the Leafs But Neely says Grasmeyers case is different The Barrie manager contends that Schandlens absence from SouthSimcoe league play last season allows him to switch clubs this season but so far Neely has been unable to con firm the rule League president Davis Ar nold said he hasnt come across any such rule in the OBA book adding that the only section that seems to apply to the dispute is the residence rule Neely is particularly upset with Ivys actions to prevent players from choosing where they want to play because he says his club has never at tempted to block Barrie residents from joining other teams in the league ly in the race and was sitting eighth as the leaders hit the mile pole She took big jump then Hutton said of his speedy John Ripsired filly She got around lot of horses in the last bit but couldnt catch the front two Next stake for Ruth Ann Rip is the Niagara Pacing series for threeyearcld fillies June at Greenwood Raceway in Toron to town Miron said he believes Cherry will give the Rockies good hearing as he considers his future think that the coaching job here even aside from the money and were going to make it as interesting as we can there is attractive said Miron think coach might like to come to team like ours one he can move up said Miron The trouble with going to team in the middle of the pack is that hell have tough time getting much better think some coaches think that way Alliston Canticks pitcher Bob Doner Nick Owen of the Orillia Majors Leafs Gord Jackson and Ellis himself are all Barrie area residents who though they have played for their present teams for several years could technically have been claimed by the Red Sox at this years organizational meetings And though the Red Sox never officially released any of the players they allowed them to join their chosen clubs courtesy Neely expected from Ivy when Schandlen showed up at the Barrie training camp Ellis said Barries decision to allow players to pass onto other teams is their problem Its up to them if they dont want to stop anybody They chose to let guys go by but we indicated at the meeting that we wanted Schandlen and we didnt let him go by called Mears the next Foyt The hardcharging Tex an moved past Unser and into second place He was full lap behind Mears but the younger driver said knew Foyt was back there somewhere and wasnt going to forget about him murmur of anticipation swept through the enormous Speedway crowd on the 190th lap as the days sixth yellow caution light brought out the orts Editor David Fuller7266537 pace car after last years runneru Tom Sneva smack ed the tliirdturn wall Under the bunchup rule adopted here this year that meant Foyt was within reach of Mears as the green flag was dropped for an allout sprint with four laps to go But it didnt happen Not only cantwwwnfl did Foyt slow down in the last two laps but he wound up coasting across the finish line with big yin on his face Flyers future still mystery By GARRY FORBES Of The Examiner Barrie Flyers
