in 1949 there was sizeable traffic in Newfoundland coins and an tiques The trade has slowed consid erany in recent years but dealers both here and outside Newfoundland still are enticing residents to sell any valuables they have stored in their homes Attractive prices are being offered for certain Newfoun dland coins but advertisers also are calling for Canadian and American silver coins minted in 1966 or earlier and are offering up to 300 per cent above face value They also are seeking gold coins of all types bulk gold and sterling goods such as old jew elry and flatware Even gold dust is being sought together with antiques such as oil paint ings china glass war medals and military items For generations New foundlanders long regarded as world travellers have brought home coinage and interesting items from foreign lands American gold pieces were once abundant in Fortune and Placentia bays Local residents say American fishing schooners operating on the Grand Banks and other grounds off New foundland would come to the colony for supplies of herring bait Newfoundland fishermen to advertise When business was good he said He didnt need to advertise For the life of us we cant remember his Oh Dorrie Examinrr insisted that they pay for her ring in gold SOLD ITEMS CHEAPLY Unfortunately many New foundlanders did not realize the value of man items they pos sessed They iscarded themes being old and outdated or sold them to unscrupulous buyers for much less than the objects true worth This was especially true of coins and banknotes issued by Newfoundland and up to 1949 Prior to the appearance of the first Newfoundland coinage al most anything went in general trade and many foreign copper and silver coins were in com mon use practically up to 1949 The colonys first co per comage pears to have Introdu in 1865 when large cent bigger than 50cent piece was circulated It was common until the Commission of Government days in the 19305 when it was replaced by the smaller coins used in Can ada and the United States At about the same time the nickel replaced the colonys small silver fivecent piece and the silver quarter was re placed with 20cent piece of the samesize Prior to the appearance of the first Newfoundland coinage al most anything went in general trade and many foreign copper and silver coins were in com mon use practically up to 1949
