on opposite sides in the unleaded gasoline dispute The conservationists say pro duetion of unleaded gas wastes precious petroleum supplies be cause more crude oil is re quired to produce the same amount of gas when lead is re moved in refineries The environmentalists counter with number of points they dispute the amount of extra crude needed to make unleaded gas they say better gas mileage compensates for the increased amount used and they underline the health hazards associated with lead emissions from gasoline burning It is waste of crude be cause it takes five per cent more crude to produce prer mium unleaded said Rod dick Smith chief engineer for fuel safety in Ontarios ministry of consumer and commeriral relations Our concern is that the fuel is running out and that seems bigger problem than emission standards he said Theres room to relax emis sion limits protect the environ ment and save what little fuel we have EXPERTS DISAGREE But experts disagree on ex actly how much more crude is needed to make unleaded gas The figures range from one to 37 per cent more to produce regular unleaded and up to five per cent more to make pre mium unleaded Joseph Labuda chief of the fuels divxsion of the federal en vironment department wants to see even less lead in gas He said it is nitpicking to talk about wasted crude in unleaded gas production because the amount is so small will be part of the centennial celebration Anyone who has pictures or knows where they can be found is asked to call the committee in charge Jean Kell at 4562623 or Ethel Campbell at 4563875 The
