release May 2479 This Is Anniversary Of Maple Leaf Forever Many of you who are reading this will remember when May 24 was one of the most exciting days of the year In some parts of Canada it was the day to have the first swim At night nearly every family Queen Victorias birthday even display to celebrate put on fireworks though the good queen was long gone Members of the family waved sparklers and stood back while father let off the rockets that soared into the air and exploded into myriad of colors And everyone would sing The 24th of May its the queens birthday Today is also the anniversary of The Maple Leaf Forever Alexander Muirs verse was set to music and first sung in public at Beaverton Ontario on May 24 1871 The maple leaf itself became Canadian symbol before 1700 and was suggested as such by early explorers It was adopted as the official emblem of the St Jean Baptiste Society in 1834 although it has since been replaced by the fleurdelis In 1867 Confederation year the Maple Leaf was included in the armorial bearings of Ontario and Quebec This may have resulted from the first royal visit to Canada in 1860 when Edward Prince of Wales toured the British North American colonies as far west as Niagara Leading citizens of Toronto urged everyone to wear maple leaf as the emblem of Canada and the idea was adopted by thousands of people who watched the royal processions Finally the maple leaf became Canadas official em blem in 1965 when the new ceremony at Ottawa flag was introduced in OTHER EVENTS ON MAY 24 107 Colonists evacuated Port Royal Acadia 1745 degree from the Tokyo based United Nations Univer sity and nobody ever will But this littleknown in stitution tucked away on two floors of Tokyo skyscraper now has sufficient funds to take its place in the academic world The turning point in the uni versitys threeyear history came last December when the British government pledged $10 million says Dr James Hester the institutions rector and for mer president of New York Uni versity Britains contribution altered the institutions financial pic ture and prompted other gov ernments in Europe Asia and the Middle East to take another look at their financial assist ance Hester said in an inter view Instead of paying for the up keep of campus and buildings providing students with lea professors and all the other things expected of conventional university contributions are put into an endowment fund the interest from which supports the university PROGRESS noon The UN organization has sev eral research projects in the works and all are moving ahead vigorously Hester says In Algeria for example were helping to design solar village where traditional archi lecture and modern solar energy will be combined The university is supplying the technical input on solar knowledge The university has passed its first test its really pheno menal when you think weve only been going for three years Hester says Britain initially had been one of the govern ments opposed to the creation of the university but reversed its decision after thorough evaluation program The Doctor Says Grandmothers intuition right By PAUL RUBLE MI cussed recently solid foods Bernice BedaOsol May 25 1979 Dear Dr Ruble My daugh Ideally these should not be though you may experience terinlaw could not breastfeed her baby so she put it on lowfat milk told her this is not good and that the baby needs whole milk She did not consult her doctor on this Will the baby be affected The baby is very thin and has no appetite MotherinLaw Grandmothers intuition is right But read on In order of preference in in fant feeding would list mothers milk first fortified formulas second and whole milk poor third Skim milk doesnt even make the list Your daughterinlaw has prob ably fallen into the old cut thecholesterol trap she hopes to spare her baby future ar terial problems and obesity The goal is praiseworthy but the method is horrible and dangerous Formulas are her answer It is probably best to avoid any cows milk in the infants diet The current thinking is that cows milk has too much nutri ent volume calories protein sodium etc The infant is delicate little wonder and can easily get into trouble Its tiny system cant cope with an ex cess load which can result in dehydration loss of too much body fluid and even infant obesity This is especially true through the first three months Full development of the new borns kidneys may take full year If it must be cows milk it shouldnt be the skimmed type because that may create def ciency in essential fatty acids While on this subject Id like to return to matter dis given for the first six months and sparingly if at all in the second six months There is no advantage in it and for the same reasons cited above in talking about whole milk The kidneys develop slowly in the early months and may not be ready for heavy concentrated load of nutrients Your daughterinlaw should certainly check with her doctor about this infants diet and probably look to good formula as an alternative Its enough that adults get themselves in tizzy about fancysounding words like cholesterol No need to transfer these anxieties to the helpless infant Dear Dr Ruble My grandson recently returned home crying and explained his dinky was caught in his pants zipper Well after 10 minutes his grandfather finally separated the zipper from the skin 15 this fairly common among young boys who dont wear underpants Many young man had reason to rue the day the zipper was born So have many par ents and grandparents The fa miliar tearfilled enactment of the unzippering is repeated many times in hospital emer gency rooms each year It makes sense to encourage the wearing of underpants for young tots avoiding this trauma among other things On more serious note would advise professional attention for this painful frightening and possibly harmful situation even though grandpa came through for him this time BRIDGE Oswald Jacoby and Alan Sontag 932 was passed Bad situation made worse establishing national broad casting system for Canada 1962 United States astronaut Malcolm Scott Carpenter completed three orbit flight in space capsule barries stog May 24 1938 The 91h Boy Scout Forestry Camp held at the Provincial Seed Extracting Plant Angus The registration in the camp numbered 150 boys and leaders The mornings were spent planting trees on property pur chased by the County of Simcoe and adjacent to Angus The total number of trees planted by the boys was 132000 which meant that each boy planted almost 1000 trees Although Barrie had never had any supervised summer playgrounds for the school children it was the hope of the Board of Directors of the YM CA that an attempt be made to establish three centres one in Allandale one at Queens Park and one at St Vincents Park Innisfil Township Park was to have $3700 wharf at the ex pense of the Dominion of Canada this being one of many items included in the $40000000 public works program placed before the House of Commons The Town of Barrie possessed an official waterfront guardian to whom it payed salary of $100 per year but no equipment with which he might save lives it was revealed at meeting of the town council Cliff Carley the guardian had only rowboat It was stated that launch would be faster than rowboat but it was pointed out that it would be us ed very little and might not be all ready to start up when need ed Barrie got off on the right foot that season in the in termediate OBA race by beating Penetanguishsne 41 on Victoria Day in the opening North Simcoe
