receiv ed an ounce of heroin valued at more than $3000 from local barber during prearranged rendezvous at the Holiday Inn in Barrie last December Constable Nino Sonsini of the RCAMP drug squad in Toronto was one of several witnesses called by the crown during the first day of the county court trial of James Mete 32 charg ed with trafficking in the nar cotic diacetylmorphine com monly known as heroin Constable Sonsini testified he posed as serious drug buyer series of telephone calls took place between him and the ac cused regarding Sonsinis pur chase of an ounce of heroin last December He said the calls resulted in meeting between KEN HERON the two men December 18 in Woodys Lounge at the Holiday Inn Sonsini said he met with Mete at 805 pm that night in the lounge alone but protected by other undercover RCMP drug squad officers in the room He said they talked for about 20 minutes when Mete took out small package wrapped in foil and handed it to the officer tell ing him to test its quality in the washroom Sonsini said he got up then signaled to his associates who arrested Mete During the federal crown at torney Palmers chief ex amination Sonsini said part of one telephone conversation took place in Italian During his cross examination defence lawyer Bill McKenzie asked Judge Clare if Mete could ask Sonsini question in Italian RABBI EARL GROLLMAN children knows death who leave their cars parked at downtown meters all day and continually fill up the meters with money Merchants are believed to be the main culprits and that it leaves less parking space for downtown shoppers Council proposed last fall that anyone parked over two hour limit be ticketed even if there is money still in the meter But public outcry following an Examiner story forced the city to reconsider its decision BOARD CONTRADKTORY Ald Ernie Rotman said the suggestion by the downtown board was contradictory He said if the city did not enforce the two hour restriction right away it would defeat the pur pose of trying to entice shoppers downtown But Benevenuti said the board was looking for workable alternatives He said that once the tiered parking structure was built the board would be in favor of the strictest means possible to prevent meter feeders from plugging parking spaces Peter McIntyre member of the board said that because of the citys layout merchants cant provide offstreet parking for employees The board also expressed total opposition to any future one way street systems in downtown Barrie Benevenuti said there is no pressing traffic problems downtown which require such drastic and upsetting solution as this Barrie general committee will look into the downtown boards recommendation at future date Mayor Ross Archer told the board Spending concerns board
