it Entertainment natgg Does Barrie care about the arts By STEPHEN BAUER Of The Examiner Does Barrie city council give damn about the arts Apparently not judging from the 1979 city budget Out of total estimated expenditure of $20 million the city plans to spend less than onetenth of one per cent in direct support to visual and performing arts groups in the city Grants approved include $6646 to the Barrie City Concert Band $250 to the Gryphon Theatre Foundation $2200 to Yv 77j the Huronia Symphony and $1000 to Kempenfest The public library which presents concerts and programs for children and adults gets 583711150 this year That may sound like lot of money but it isnt the library needs more money for expansion and this years grant represents only the bare minimum needed to keep the library operating think thats shocking also think that its up citizens in Barrie and particularly the people directly in to make sure that city council realizes the important role that cultural activities play in this city Its not enough to say that these groups can support themselves If the city can afford to spend more than $20000 jUst to operate winter skating rinks in Barrie surely groups like the Gryphon Theatre the Huronia Symphony the Bar ric Art tub and the Littles Hill Players merit equal sup volved in the arts port ity councils priorities must be wrong when the Gryphon Ihcatrc gets grant only $200 more than the Santa Claus Parade receives In brief presented to the recent mayors conference on growth at Georgian College Gryphon argues that it deserves more support because it boosts the citys economy by offering high quality professional theatre in Barrie Thats true enough but the theatre should be supported for cultural reasons as well as economic ones And with the expansion of the Gryphon into twelvevmonth operation this year the theatre needs even geater support from the city It isnt getting that support City council obviously feels that live professional theatre isnt important Perhaps theatre is too much of an elite endeavor to earn the backing of local aldermen Perhaps art isnt important enough to earn decent share of taxpayers dollars Perhaps culture doesnt matter at all Perhaps Barrie residents are only in terested in hockey playgrounds skating rinks and swimm ing pools Short takes Walter Babiak conducts the Huronia District Youth 0r chcstra in concert Anne Down plays an English wife who falls in love with an American bomber pilot in war time London Downs previous credites include The Great Train Robbery and the popular TV series Upstairs Downstairs shes remarkably beautiful and intelligent actress which makes it difficult to understand why she chose to appear in such trite and trivial film Hanover Street Given decent script which could have allowed her to develop the character of Margaret Down might have turned in respectany credible performance But she never comes across as anything more than twodimensional character beautiful wife torn between her love for courageous pilot tHarrison Ford and dull husband Christopher Plummer Downs love scenes with Ford are embarrassingly cliched and unconvincing Ford has trouble getting through line more than four words long Down looks as though shed rather be sipping tea in the parlor of her townhouse than lying in Fords arms Their relationship por trayed in brief scenes sand wiched between bombing mis sions over France never pro gresses beyond the formulistic banality of pulp novel And Plummer versatile ac tor who can usually turn any role into worthwhile per formance wrestles with more cliches as the dull husband Hes good man who feels com Joe plays wizard for Vannelli ICUMUNIUN TII itnO Vannclli Iollcd on sofa relax ing as for once the interview centred on his brother Joe Joe
