solid wood counter which has survived countless bids anti que dealers The open face shelves are of carved cherry wood The whole effect is tantaliz ineg reminiscent of Gond Street in London or John Jo Campbells in the Donegal highlands BORN IN BARBIE Craigs was born in Barrie in 1894 when John Craig 21 year old tailor from Goderich Ontario set up business as an exclusive merchant tailor across the street from the pre sent store He had learned his trade as youth in Goderich later travelling to Michigan for specialized training In those days there was no such thing as suit bought off rack One entered the shop selected the cloth from bolts of imported materials was measured and returned in about two weeks to pick up the suit and pay out about $20 John Craig working alone would first shrink the cloth press it with huge hand irons heated on coal or wood stove in the shop then prepare paper pattern from the customers measurements cut the garment and stitch it on footpedalled Singer sewing machine After couple of fit tings the suit was ready for wearing It was two weeks work for what today appears paltry sum but John Craigs work was quickly recognized for its quali ty and the fledgling business took root In time John Craig married Barrie girl the former Lucretia Ness The couple had eight children The second youngest Jack is coowner to day along with his nephew George who is Frank Craigs son lheres no telling just what decisions affecting the future of Barrie were made around the old pot bellied stove in Craigs tailor shop For John extended his service to the community be entering public life and holds the distinction of having been elected Mayor nine times after first serving as alderman deputyreeve and reeve He died in 1947 His sons remember when they as children hung about the fringes of group of men gathered in the store to discuss local issues while the sewing machine whirred in the background On Sundays all business mat ters were laid aside as John Craig figure of sartorial splendor elegantly attired in striped trousers and morning coat strolled off to Collier Street United Church then the Methodist church As time roll ed on and dress became less formal John wore direc tors suit of charcoal grey On formal occasions he was always impeccably attired in tuxedo before pm and tails after six While the store has changed location three times it never left Dunlop Street being at in tervals at number 49 then and now 42 since 1927 There has always been Craig behind the counter Bill Craig was associated with his father until 1940 and Frank till 1972 engagements StaffertElliott v1 WMMm WWovmmrr Barrie John Craigs first tailor shop in 1894 During the depression years while many other businesses were forced to close Craigs en dured Jack and George say Craigs survived because of sound management Close curbs were placed on credit the men work ed long hours staying open till midnight on Saturdays to pick up trade from the after show crowd But while we didnt hold sales or offer bargains people knew they could get personal service here and by offering only quality merchandise we could stand behind what we sold says George grandson of John Jack Craig said that by the 1930s ready made suits had become more popular In time the tailoring business diminish ed then stopped Johns sewing machine hand irons and other bits of antiquity are still displayed in the store The biggest change in mer chandising for Craigs has come in the method of ordering We used to have people call on us and display their wares Jack says Now we pick up phone and its all done by somebody somewhere with computers Its bit embar rassing when they ask you after 85 years how to spell your name Just recently Craigs has had to discontinue the sale of pure line handerkerchiefs from Ireland The last salesman didnt even have to open his suit case George said He knew that at $450 piece there would be few takers We hadnt known they had gone up so much and wondered why our remaining supply was being snapped up for $250 each Today most of the merchan dise comes from Montreal or Toronto It used to come from the British Isles As the new world learned the skills of the old business gradually shifted from one side of the Atlantic to the other but Craigs continues to carry only top of the line garments Dr and Mrs Stautfert of Barrie announce the skaters bicyclists and joggers The problem is there isnt enough room for the three of them on the same bike path rs the summer approachos they are forming lessthana ectuqipn Roller skaters sayfhat bikers ride side by side and fill up all the paths The joggers say the roller skaters line up in packs of six or seven and run them off the road and the bikers say the joggers think they own the road Before it reaches violent proportions think we should all sit down and work something out before the leisurers become militant The solution seems relatively simple The bicyclists could use the bike paths on the odd days and the odd joggers on the even days with the exception of full days on Wednesdays when the skaters could hold forth The mornings however would have to be set aside for the skateboarders and the late evenings for the trail bikers exit cept on windy days On windy days the paths would play host to the kite flyerst This schedule will apply in all areas with the exception of the bike paths routed around water In this case weekends would be reserved for the boat and canoe people who would have to use the facilities as portage to put their boats in and out of the water This would also apply to snorkeiers water skiiers and fishermen who are casting from the banks Thursday mornings of alternating weeks would of course be set aside for hula hoopers and baton twirlers as anyone could see the logic of not having them on the same day In the event the bike path is adjacent to golf course rightofway would have to go to the golf carts en route to the greens This is the basic summer schedule and would of course change during the winter months with crosscountry skiiers ice skaters on the bike paths near thepond and sn mobilers those near golf courses There now think weve taken care of everyo wlipr shares the outofdoors for leisure with the exceptonof the walkers with biting dogs When can they use the paths Do you want to tell em Pollys Pointers Vinegar works well
