tertainment Eight firsts at festival for natural musician By STEPHEN GAUER Of The Examiner For someone whos just scored another triumph in the recent Orillia Kiwanis Music Festival by winning eight firsts four seconds and two scholarships Lynn Langford is remarkably nonchalant about her future prospects as musi cian People think Im crazy if dont make music my career says the 16yearold Central Collegiate student Its possi ble but dont take it serious yMiss Langford doesnt have to take music seriously to win prizes at music festivals shes natural musician She swirted playing piano at the age of three but has never taken formal lessons In June shell try her Grade 10 exam in flute although shes had only yer and half of lessons Violin is the only instrument shes studied extensively taking lessons from many profesional musicians including several from Toronto Miss Langfords candid ad mission that she rarely prac tices may be disheartening to music teachers but the young musician is in good company Glenn Gould the brilliant Canadian pianist agrees that good musician doesnt need to practice When she prepares for music festival for example Miss Langford doesnt begin practising her music until week before the festival begins The Fifth Musketeer could use good tonic By STEPHEN GAUER Of The Examiner The last time they appeared on the screen the four Musketeers those noble defenders of justice in 18th cen tury France were full of enough vim and vigor to slay an army of royal soldiers But in their latest incarnation as ag ing swashbucklers in The Fifth Musketeer at the Bayfield Mall Cinema DArtagnan and his friends look like prime candidate for Geritol The Musketeers dont hold the centre stage in the film which is based on Alexander Dumass novel The Man in the Iron Mask Instead we follow Most artists second iobs OTTAWA CP Three out of every four artists in Canada take second jobs Statistics Canada survey released Friday shows The federal agency also found that 80 per cent of the countrys artists are earning less than $5000 year from direct art sales The survey covered approx imately onethird of the 3500 artists in Canada and was con ducted in February 1978 Key findings were Almost 60 per cent of all ar tists are male Almost half live in Ontario but the Atlantic provinces have higher percentage of the countrys artists than their population would suggest The opera by the German composer Englebert llum perdinck whose name was adopted by popular British singer was first produced at Weimar in 1883 Goldsehmidt artistic director of the Guelph Spring Sylvia Kristel of Emmanuelle fame TWISTS AND TURNS Phillip and Louis take quick disliking to one another They exchange places several times The plot twists and turns like tde jabs of Musketeers sword worked parttime Half of these artists had jobs in artrelated fields main 1y teaching Only 20 per cent of artists reported incomes of $5000 or more from selling their work Tbe most frequent com plaint about their working en vironment was that dealer com missions are too high The se cond major deterrent they reported was the high cost of imported materials and equip ment 0nly one in seven artists is helpless and the four Musketeers carry out daring rescues One problem with The Fifth Musketeer is that if youve seen one swordfight youve seen them all When Phillip and the Musketeers arent battling the villains the pace of the film lags badly even gorgeous costume and the lavish in teriors of Versailles cant com pensate for the lack of excite ment in what should be first class adventure film MISCAST ROLE Another problem with this film is Beau Bridges who does his best in strenuous double role but is badly miscast Three of the four Musketeers Lloyd Bridges Cornel Wilde and Jose Ferrer look tired while the fourth Alan Hale Jr the captain in Gilligans Island looks tired and ridiculous The women in the film dont fare well either Miss Kristel cant escape paperthin voice and regretably obvious lack of talent Ursula Andress as King Louiss mistress continues an unbroken string of unmemorable film per formances Olivia de Haviland has brief and forgettable cameo role as Phillips mother That leaves Rex Harrison Harrison is the noble court of ficial who helps the Musketeers in their time of need Hes an actor who usually brings digni ty to film but hes must too classy performer to the higher calibre of competi tion and adjudication by winn ing several awards The Toronto festivals are much more competitive she says dont like it if you make mistake the other students are up and ap plauding But there is better flute competition down there Im not really competitive performer like the Kiwanis festival because it gives me chance to hear other students play and get comment from the adjudicators And like the challenge of playing something new Music takes up lot of Miss Langfords time despite her claim she doesnt take it very seriously Four hours week she teaches flute she also plays flute in the Central Col legiate band and violin in the Huronia Symphony Orchestra If Miss Langford had her way shed be able to play most of the instruments in the orchestra want to learn to play as many instruments as can its good if you want to teach music Im not sure want to be teacher but know have the pa tience Miss Langford has another year of school at Central before she has to decide whether shes going to continue her music studies Shes considerng psychology as an alternative That seems like waste of natural talent for music Miss Langford refuses to take her many awards seriously but proof shes doing And while she laughs at the suggestion shes very special type of musician she is serious about her approach to playing Whenever play always make performance she says The festival adjudicators must agree with that state ment IMPERIAL CINEMA CENTRE 7283440 SOIII IIIIIIB IBBIIIIIS man Lynn Langford student at Central Collegiate says she rarely practices but that hasnt
