just didnt have enough players explained manager 52 Doug Howard vicepresident of the league Veterans who didnt show up for practice included the heavyhitting Pat Hennessy leading batter with the defending league cham pions for number of years Hennessy is coaching the Orillia Silver Bombers football team Outfielder Mel St Onge also decided to retire as player in order to concentrate on coaching the Orillia Junior Pon tiacs We felt it was more important to help bring along the juniors said St Onge The latter club will compete in junior Ontario Baseball Association OBA competition as well as the county league Coach Gander Ross who piloted the Majors to six county chain ionships in row confided he was glad to carry on prow Ing there was full turnout But when the club found it necessary to look for outside help for replacements he agreed with the decision to withdraw Defendin champions will be missed The loss the Majors no doubt will be felt around the cir cuit Barrie and Orillia have long been keen baseball and hockey rivals and the Majors will be missed here as well in Ivy Alliston Newmarket and Collingwood Pitching ace Jerry Udell and one or two others are likely to play Intermediate OBA ball for Little Britain in the Eastern Ontario loop Udell has pitched for this club off and on for several seasons besides hurling against county teams In winning their sixth straight league title last year the Majors finished the regular schedule in first place and then captured eight out of nine playoff games In the finals they downed Newmarket Hawks four straight due lar ely to stellar pitching by Udell and southpaw Brock Richa son Although there had been earlier rumours that the Major might withdraw the announcement few days ago actually came as surprise to many fans There seem to be lot of enthusiasm shown at the prac tice saw commented disappointed fan who said he would miss watching the team iaqri Shift sugport to Junior Pontiacs Orillia aseball fans are currently being urged to get behind the Junior Pontiacs Despite the teams lastplace finish last year senior coach Ron Johnston and associates have high hopes for bette showing Mel St Onge and Lorne Wingrove have been assisting Ron in putting the player prospects through thei paces in practice sessions With Majors out of the picture there should be keene competition than ever for the 1979 championship Ivy Leafs Alliston Canucks and Newmarket appear to be leading con tenders Barrie and Collingwood also have good prospects which should provide merry race Plans for the coming season will of Schools Athletic Association champion ship convener Jim Hamilton said today Hamilton chairman of the provincial OFSAA rugger com mittee and Eastview Secondary School rugger coach said Cen trals standing came as result of their recent victory over Torontos highlytouted Vic toria Park Secondary School The 12school OFSAA cham pionship is slated for June 12 at Banting Memorial High School in
