ao tho oxamlnor Wodnooday my 1m Stoyner righton trock Men 91mm Cruel looking method works By HELEN MASON watched Milo Heatherington begin training colt at Tri ple Stock Farms near Tottenham Some amateurs may think Heatheringtons techniques are cruel but what saw was professional who could teach colt more in two hours than other trainers teach in month Heatherington demonstrated his methods on spoiled twoyearold colt who was used to getting his own way Things had gotten so bad that the wife of the colts owner was afraid to go into stall with the horse Hea therington started the session by putting figure eight on the twoyearold and attaching it to rope that ran through steel ring in the arena wall The rope Was secured in such way that it could be un done in just few seconds This technique is not for amateurs warns Heather ington One man saw him use fugure eight and decided to try it on his own horse But he used rope that had 30 feel of slack Heatherington leaves only four feet The horse back ed up fast tried to take off and broke his neck as he headed out the barn door Heatherington feels the figure eight helps the horse teach himself Like any training aid ll can be dangerous when misused The figure eight works by tightening around several nerves on the horses head when he hacks away from it or rears He learns to associate his pain with the rope not the trainer Ileatheringtons charges follow like dogs After all its the trainer who frees him from his misery when he gets tangled up The savoir becomes friend At the end of one mornings training Heatheringtons charges follow him like dogs When the twoyearold stands quietly while the trainer touches him with whip Heatherington goes on the next stage of training He unties the coil from the wall and holds the slack end of the rope while he ties the cells front leg so that it is couple of inches off the ground He uses soft oneinch rope he has unravelled and rebraided for thejob Again Heatherington cautions that this is job for pro fessional If the knots are too loose or in the wrong place they can injure the horse When the colts leg is tied up Heatherington begins to teach the whoa and git up And darn it all anyway if the colt doesnt listen to him the poor thing gets zapped by the r0 lplie colt falls several times before he realizes he cant beat that rope And guess who helps him up And gets all the credit for being great guy Heatherington leaves the leg rope on until the colt tells him hes had enough Again this is matter of experience thought the twoyearold was ready to quit several times but Heatherington told me to just wait minute and sure enough his charge started to fight all over again Once colt stops hes ready Once the colt stops fighting the rope he is ready to longe horse longes when he moves in circle around his handler He already knows whoa and will swing in to the centre of the circle on the command halt At this point Heatherington drops the rope and lets the colt free He follows the trainer around the arena The colt associates the rope with his trouble explains Heatherington He associates me with letting him loose and with friendship If an amateur tried Heatheringtons techniques the colt Would end by fearing him Heatheringtons assistant tries to get the colt to follow him but the twoyearold ignores him dont give away all my secrets says Heatherington But think noticed him keeping out of the colts line of vi sion when the twoyearold was fighting that rope During the next hour Heatherington saddles the colt longes him rides him at walk and trot in both directions picks up his feet backs him and asks for couple of halts Now after that traumatic first hour expected the horse to be pretty tense when he was mounted He wasnt You know the way horses tail swings lazily from side to side when hes relaxed Thats the way this colt moved He didnt try to buck either Heatherington says he has even cantered colts during their first day Uusually he leaves it until the second or third lesson This man has the ability to train horse without putting him through pressure cooker Over the years have seen and ridden several horses trained by Heatherington They were all wellknown for their good manners and friendliness What more can you ask of horse trainer Upstart Range NEW YORK CP Dave Maloney captain of New York Rangers smiled wryly and said Any guy in
