Alta CPI After quartercentury of stagnation this community of 6200 east of Calgary which saw its most recent boom in the demand for coal during the Se cond World War is showing signs of recovery Supporting the optimism of local residents is the prospect of development at nearby oil and natural gas fields cautious hopes for resurgence in the coal industry and inquiries about industrial sites Ten years ago the paint was peeling off the houses and places were falling down says Bill Sheddy Drumheller Chamber of Commerce presi dent Now its cleaned up and were starting to grow The town was founded by Sam Drumheller in the early years of the century Known as the wonder town of the west and the coal capital of Canada it soon developed into rough and tumble community John Sbora 79 who began working in the mines when he was 19 recalls that there were poker games on Saturdays in every second house and the houses in between were whorehouses The Depression of the 19305 closed many of the mines The Carter visits ailing Wayne in hOSpital President Carter emerges from UCLA Medlcol Centre Saturday after vlsltlng acting great John Wayne who has been hospltollzed since early last week In Los Angeles Carter met with the veteran union movement became radical and occasionally violent There was an upturn in Drumhellers fortunes with the Second World War but the mines shut down again during the 19505 and 605 as coal use was replaced by oil and gas Now Sheddy can see gradual growth for the next one or two years and then it may just take off Town manager Don Guidolin says the turning point came in 1967 when the federal correc tions service built the Drumheller Institute The years since then have seen slow but steady growth he says Tourism government ser vices and centralization of farm supply outlets in Drumheller have helped sup port the economy and there now are signs of spurt in growth new residential areas expanded recreational services new hotel $0 million shopping centre and the possibility of regional com munity college Perhaps the best sign for Drumheller is the renewed op timism of its people As local real estate agent Bob Llewellyn says Drumhcllcr is out to beat its drum actor for about l5 minutes and told hlm he had the love affection and prayers of not only everybody In our own nation but of millions of persons around the world AP
