no atA 9m For years after Mary Batvsman practiced her particular brand of sorcery in Northern England many child was disciplined with the threatening phrase G0 to sleep now or the Witch of Yorkshire will get you Even today Marys name appears on lists of the 10 most evil women who had ever lived Born Mary Harker in 1768 at Ainsenby close by Thirsk to hard working law abiding farming couple she didnt waste any time letting her parents know that she was dif ferent But the time Mary was six she would lie at the least provocation and would steal anythingshe could lay her hands on The Harkers talked to their little girl but their lectures only seemed to add fuel to the childs already smouldering hostility In 1780 the Harkers now thoroughly convinced that their daughter was bad seed saw to it that she was placed as servant in good home in Thirsk For the next eight years Mary got into minor scrapes but by continually moving from place to place she managed to stay out of the grasp of the law When she went to Leeds the largest city she had ever seen she was unable to secure employment and almost starved to death Strictly by chance Mary happened to meet friend of her fathers who took an interest in her plight This gentleman found employment for her and she seemed to settle down for three years At about this time Mary met John Bateman The pair knew each other for only three weeks before marrying in 1792 We are unable to find out too much about John as he remained on the scene for such short perid of time Bid adieu Mary had penchant for stealing cheating and simply acquiring other peoples property In matter of months John realized he had tiger by the tail The pair had to keep moving to stay step ahead of the law When Mary told him Of her plans to become fortune teller John figured it was time to pull up stakes and bid adieu to his true love He left Mary and joined the army Mary returned to Leeds and in 1799 we find her actively engaged as fortune teller To make ends meet she sold charms It was meagre living and not exactly what Mary had in mind As keen observer of human nature and with growing confidence in her own ability Mary realized that given the right victims she could graduate to bigger and better things at As if cast by Hollywood gullible simple minded pair named Stead came upon the scene Mrs Stead approached Mary convinced that another woman was stealing the affec tions of her man Mary pursuaded the not too swift Mrs Stead to part with most of her wordly goods in return for charm guaranteed to keep the man of the house out of direct contact with the other woman When Stead up and joined the army effectively propelling himself into training camp and out of the clutches of the scheming female it was proof positive to his wife that the charm had worked Word spread about the supernatural powers of the Witch of Yorkshire When young girl relative of Mrs Steads came to Leeds several months pregnant but without hus band Mary said never fear she would cast spell on the im pregnator of the young girl The spell would bring him begg ing for the young ladys hand in marriage small sum was of course required to take care of in cidentals Once this vulgar formality was taken care of Mary cast her spell Still the stubborn lover did not appear on bended knees Instead the young ladys condition grew more acute with each passing day More spells were needed Each required cash payments Mary bled the poor girl dry but was unable to produce the desired results In desperation Mary fed the simply girl some medicine and managed to induce an abortion Ironically the almost father showed up begging forgiveness and talking marriage The now weak young girl did marry her sweetheart but her ordeal had taken its toll The poor girl died swearing that Mary Bateman was the cause of her downfall No formal suspicion concerning her death was ever cast upon Mary Once the Witch of Yorkshire had tasted the fruits of the witchcraft business she realized she had found her niche We will never know how many frauds she perpetrated on the simple minded and weak spirited but the score might very well exceed 100 Three Quaker ladies mother and two daughters were the next to fall under Marys influence The two sisters the Misses Kitchen owned drapery shop in the heart of Leeds Once Mary ingratiated herself with the sisters she began demonstrating her various skills to them Mary interpreted the stars read their palms and in general convinced the gullible ladies that she really possessed certain mysterious powers Astime went on they came to believe that she ac tually held the power of life and death over them In September 1803 the younger sister took ill and was confined to bed It seemed only natural for the elder sister to solicit Marys help Mary churned up brew or two but nothing seemed to work The younger Miss Kitchens condi tion deteriorated rapidly week after taking ill she died in agony When the end was inevitable the girls mother Mrs Kitchen arrived from Wakefield She and her surviving daughter immediately took ill Both died two days later With no other friends or relatives it was left to Mary to at tend to the Kitchens affairs The Witch of Yorkshire arrang ed triple funeral and then proceeded to sell off all the wordly goods of her three victims She let it be known that the three ladies had gone to their great reward having been striken by the dreaded plague The terrible disease was so feared that it was weeks before tradesmen dropped around to the Kitchens place of residence to discreetly have their accounts settled The place was empty When inquiries were made of Mary she explained that she had sold the ladies possessions to satisfy the most pressing debts Those few more expensive pieces in her own home were of course gifts given to her by the deceased triol before their untimely demise By 1806 the Witch of Yorkshire had reputation Those who could afford to be fleeced were obliged by Mary Her successes were remembered while failures were attributed to stronger spells usually cast by the devil himself All flutter Unfortunately for them Mr and Mrs William Perigo Of Bramley picked this uncture in Marys career to come within her sphere of in uence Mrs Perigo got up one morn ing and felt flutter in her chest She consulted her physi cian but could find nothing wrong with her Hearing of Marys unusual powers Mrs Perigo contacted her in near by Leeds Mary welcomed the unfortunate woman with open arms Here was sucker just begging to be taken Mary explained that the nature of Mrs Perigos com plaint necessitated her contacting Miss Blythe who would be able through Mary of course to cast out Mrs Perigos ailment Once this little idea was thrown out to Mrs Perigo and was duly swallowed Mary knew she had live one on the hook There followed several letters from the elusive Miss Blythe containing instructions on just how Mary should go about curing the ill Mrs Perigo Would you believe sewing guinea notes in the four corners of Mrs Perigos bed with strict instructions that they were to remain there for 18 mon ths The Perigos believed every word and watched as Mary sewed Week after week Miss Blythe sent letters each one containing preposterous instructions and each extracting money or food in order to make the spell work The Perigos complied with every ridiculous request and were slowly be ing drained of their life savings Mrs Perigos condition didnt change As the 18 months were drawing to close Mary realized that she had to kill the Perigos It was unbelievably simple She had the ever obliging Miss Blythe send letter to the Perigos instructing them to make batch of pudding Enclosed in the letter were six envelopes of white powder Each day the hapless victims were told to place the powder into the pudding before consuming that days portion They were not to worry if they became ill That was part of the spell The trusting Perigos immediately became Violently ill but so great was their faith in Mary that they continued to eat the poisoned pudding On the sixth and last day the pudding tasted so bad Mr Perigo couldnt force himself to eat it Mrs Perigo had trouble but managed to consume all the pudding She pro mptly died probably believing that at the expiration of the 18 months she would be returned from the dead to rejoin her husband After Mrs Perigo was laid to rest Mary continued to fleece the bereaved husband She hinted at the resurrection of Perigo and incredible as it appears to us now Mr Perigo continued to pay to keep the charm alive At the ex piration of the 18 months Mr Perigo thought there would be no harm in taking the guinea notes from the four corners of his wifes bed it was only when he discovered torn papers sewn into the bed that any doubts concerning Mary came into his mind The more he thought about it the more shattered he became Unbelievably the past 18 months of living hell had been or chestrated by the evil mind of Mary Bateman It had taken while but Mr Perigo was now awake He told his story to the police The inquiry which followed revealed that furniture food and money supposedly passed on to Miss Blythe had in reali ty never left Marys possession Miss Blythe did not exist other than in Marys imagination All the letters had been written by Mary Some of the uneaten pudding was produc ed It was laced with corrosive sublimate of mercury At Marys murder trial the jury brought in guilty ver dict without ever leaving the courtroom The Witch of Yorkshire maintained her innocence right up to the moment the trap door sprung open and she plunged to eternity wednesdav tv EVENING the plant where 32mm are being 26 an ol nt tor oaa aecon In ea 303130 Saga amtth Danumo execugdmbytheeeatapobavldmvenfilchael
