te book page Massey autobiography shows dignity grace By ALEX BARRIS In these days of overnight successes and instantly pro claimed superstars it is easy to forget that there have been distinguished actors who devoted many decades to the theatre achieved distinction created many memorable roles entertained millions and finally retired all without ever being labelled super star One such is the veteran Cana dian actor Raymond Massey and it is heartening to know that at the age of 82 he has been able to set down his recol lections of rich full career in new volume titled Hundred Different Lives McClelland and Stewart 448 pages $1795 When he was 18 he was in troduced to beautiful girl of 16 from Buffalo who told him she intended to become an actress and appear on Broadway Young Massey determined then and there that he would do the same and indeed share stage with this girl mere 26 years later his dream came true He appeared on Broadway in George Bernard Shaws The Doctors Dilemma opposite Katherine Cornell But that was hardly his only triumph Massey also played opposite Ruth Gordon in Abe Lincoln In Illinois and Ethan Frome opposite Gertrude Lawrence in Pygmalion in England he appeared with the great Gladys Cooper and he worked with Cornell in several other American productions GETTING START Massey recalls going as youth to the Royal Alexandra Theatre in Toronto to see The Circle with John Drew uncle of the Barrymores He went backstage after the perform ance and met the famed actor who listened patiently to young Masseys tale of theatrical am bition Drew advised him to bypass New York and go straight to England where hed have better chance of getting started It turned out to be good advice and in time Massey was recognized in both the worlds Englishspeaking Having spent most of the 19205 in England Massey recr ossed the Atlantic in 1931 to star in what sounds now like ludicrous staging of Hamlet an ego trip for Norman Bel Ged des who produced directed and designed it Bel Geddess first words upon meeting Massey were Ive al tered the script bit In one scene eight guards were to en ter carrying torches Bel Ged des devised batteryoperated torches that
