backing for his movie from Canadas notoriously con servative banks But he got both and now Cal garyborn producer Peter Snell is wrapping up work on Bear Island an actionadventure movie based on Alistair MacL eans novel and at $9 million the most expensive Canadian film ever made The film tells the story Of United Nations scientific ex pedition studying changing cli matic conditions to stave off world famine It is suitably spiced with murders and politi cal intrigue Snell said in recent inter view that Bear Island is the most difficult movie he has ever made The story is set in an Arctic like environment and onloca tion shooting was divided be tween the desolate snowbound Tide Lake and Russian cruise shop moored off Glacier Bay in Alaska Lured back to Canada to make the film because of its generous tax treatments Snell scoured northern British Columbia last fall before he decided on Stewart BC as the base for the filming More than 140 crew members and actors including stars Don ald Sutherland Richard Wid mark Lloyd Bridges Christ opher Lee and Ms Redyave descended on the tiny mining community 1400 kilometres north of Vancouver where the temperature can drop to 60 and snowfall in oneyear period has reached 30 metres The sheer logistics of getting film like that together are just overwhelming even just feeding and transporting all those people says Snell just cant see anybody ever wanting to duplicate it The weather caused problems for every depart ment Sets could not be painted because the aim froze cameras had to fitted with special heat generators but the film often broke nonetheless Ms Redgrave had to find glasses when her contact lenses froze and the makeup and wardrobe departments were kept busy trying to maintain the continuity of ice and snow on beards and eyelashes bet ween the shooting of sequences shwbiz married to the late San Fran VAN ESSA REDGRAVE plays female lead But those were just the minor inconveniences young pilot was killed as his helicopter crashed while he was making film delivery and director Don Sharp and three others were stranded on glacier for three days after their helicopter broke down Snowplows worked around the clock to keep the 50 kilometre road between Stewart and Tide Lake open and crew of stuntmen had to live in canvas tents for five weeks to shoot chase sequence with speciallybuilt snow scooters and
