Trade surplus for Canada $l5OM in March OTTAWA CP Canada had trade surplus of $150 million in March about the same as the surplus month earher Statistics Canada reported today But the federal agency also said that imports are in creasing more rapldl than exports signalling an end to the sharp rises in trade alances enjoyed through most of last year The preliminary report on merchandise trade shows the surplus for the first quarter of 1979 was $653 million down from surplus of $758 million in the fourth quarter of 1978 The surplus is also down sharply from the record $13 bil hon in the first quarter of 1908 Canada had record $35billion trade surplus in 1978 up from $29 billion in 1977 mainly because the decline in the value of the dollar made Canadian goods cheaper abroad Trade Minister Jack Homer has predicted another record trade surplus for 1979 But to achieve it there will have to be exceptional surpluses throughout the rest of the year The March trade figures show that exports to the United States the biggest trading partner increased six per cent from February to $36 billion while imports from the US increased nine per cent to $38 billion Amin army remnants fleeing
