12 the examiner Tuesday June 27 1978 Fastball League working the local ball scene tune edged Mr Transmission 21 ing as see it Interlocking games better By SCOTT IIASKINS Examiner Sports Editor Is the interlocking schedule between the Barrie and District Senior Softball League and the Intermediate It may be too early to tell but Gary Eyers two of the people that should know say that it is do mg the job it was designed for generate more interest in Calvert president of the Senior league wasnt too sure about its success earlier in the season but hes changed his Errors have been the difference in many of the games and that was the case recently as Slessor and Periard Insurance It was the best interlocking game so far Calvert told ii The Examiner It was fast entertaining but once again an error turned out to be the difference Mr Transmission committed only one error but it allow ed us Slessori to score both of our runs in the second inn Calvert and Gus Intermediate teams are starting to cut down on the number of errors and if they can continue the present trend winning their share Intimidation is strange word to use when referring to two ball clubs but the Senior league was intimidating the In termediate league by its mere presence on the field That doesnt seem to be the case now Intermediate teams theyre bound to start winning their share of games Senior league team has not lost to an Intermediate op ponciit YET but its bound to happen When it does it just might give the Intermediate teams the lift they need to start are starting to realize that they have to be at the top of their game to have any chance of winning Calvert agreed with my feelings agree that some of the Senior teams intimidated the iii termediate teams Calvert said They are starting to get over it now Mr Transmission wasnt intimidated by us Player for player the Senior league is superior but there are number of impressive players in the Intermediate league Mr lransmission is young club but according to Calvert it is capable ofpulling off an upset Two other Intermediate teams Bayfield Furniture Mart and Barrie COOP can play with any team in the Senior cir cuit except maybe Slcssor and Ieriard Insurance Its still early but one pitcher who has caught Calverts eye is Mr Iraiismissions Ron Giffeii think hes the best pitcher in the Intermediate league right now alvert said They tMr Transmission has hell of team and itll get better as the season goes on Official scorekeeper at Queens Park Eyers feels that win or lose playing against tougher comnipetition is good for the Intermediate league It gives the players better competition and they can see just how good they really are he said The pitchers get to throw xrainst better batters and the batters have to learn to bit better pitching It can only help them in the long run The other problem lack of fan interest appears to be correcting itself as the races tighten up and the season moves on Early in the year every few fans were showing up to watch the games but now an average of 150 fans show up Striders qualify for provinciols All 13 of Iluronia Striders en trants in the Royal Canadian legion District track and field meet qualified for provin cial finals to be held in Oshawa inJuly All of the OnltXlllttIS won place in the finals with at least one first place finish at the meet for bantam and midget age athletes held in Aurora Saturday Strideis finished first overall as team in both bantam classes and midget girls although results are still unof ficial Among those going to the pro vinctal meet are members of the midget girls relay team which finished first in the 100 race The team included Julie lnslcy Ictti Boni Sophie Llewellyn and Jodie LaSallc Inslcy was among four members of the team who finished first in three National Hockey Leagucs board of governors meeting seems to gain more intrigue every time out Take the session Monday as an example When the governors finally emerged after daylong session the biggest comment made was nocomment from most of the people attending the affair Instead reporters were left to scramble around the rooms of highrise hotel to pick up what ever tidbits they could find Oiin time will tell who was telling the truth nc governor said the question of an NIILWorld Ilockcy Association merger was dying member of the board said that sometime today vote would be taken on whether four WIIA teams Edmonton Oilcrs Quebec Nordiques New England Whalers and Winnipeg Jets be accepted into the fold And how about the Jets spokesman that said all of his teams delegation would be leaving the hotel Apparently the Jets executive was told to turn back and stayed overnight to see what might transpire at todays niectiiig might even tip over and really get cool Fuller Don Word le co ptu res feotu re The only way to go If you are going to get soaked in this humid weather you might as well be doing something to make it worthwhile like soiling If youre lucky you if not already dead Another should There is also the case of Colorado Rockies to consider There was some speculation that one of the WIIA teams seeking entry into the NIIL might take over the ailing Colorado franchise That idea was shot down by one governor late Monday night NIIL President John Ziegler told news conference that the Rockies had not signed lease with McNichoIs Sports Arena their home rink during the last two seasons But we are still discussing the matter said Ziegler There was speculation that the fate of the Rockies might have some bearing on what the governors plan to do ltxlay about the WIIA situation But that idea dismissed by one governor althouin another NIIL member of the board said it was distinct possibility The Rockies will be discussed at this mornings meeting The only real decision admitted by all parties was an exten sion to New York Islanders to present their plan for financial restructuring GIVEN EXTENSION JIflxdt ex tiv swontt lk separate body July Iii but Ziegler said they now have until July 25 to come up with something suitable But at the moment most of the attention is neither the Rockies nor the Islanders The thing that most people have ex pressed an interest in is the future of major league hockey and whether the WIIA will continue to operate next season as It was suggested early today that the NIIL might be prepared to accept two of the WIIA teams New England and Ed monton Icavingthcsix others out in the cold But it is unlikely the WIIA people would ever go along with such plan The whole matter has become guessing game with various sources suggesting that as many as six NIIL clubs Toronto Vancouver New York Rangers Angclcs are opposed to any mcrgtr plans Three quarters of the NIIL l7rmtllilitl board of governors Montreal oston and Ins must approve any plans for expansion of Illt tiagiu and there fore no more than four can vote against the plan The Islanders were originally told to submit such plan on tJADy quickly Examiner Photo by Dave in
