many horses suffer unnecessary injury because of their owners carelessness Is your Stable area free of horse hazards Check these dozen danger areas Do you feed grain in rubber pail or well constructed grain box with no sharp edges Many horses cut themselves on the ragged edges of galvaniz ed or tin containers if you leave grain bucket in pasture or stall is the handle removed Some horses play with their empty buckets leg caught in handle could mean panic and injury is your stable yard free of loose debris including lumber and spare galvanized roof ing Every year horses receive crippling injuries from nail punc ture wounds Loose roofing blowing in the wind can sail over ad jacent fence lines and terrorise even the calmesl horses is your oat bin well secured Periodically horses work their way out of well bolted stalls dip in the oat bin could mean death Many owners find galvanised or rubber garbage cans conve nient for oat storage Make sure these are hidden behind well secured door if you tie your horse is his ring higher than his head and short enough so that he cant get his front leg over it More than one owner has found his mount strangled in his tie ropc Rope burns on fellocks and legs are also probable Similarity tying horse to the crosspiece of fence or to moveable object is asking for trouble Use post or well secured ring ls your fencing safe Wood is the best but most expensive fence for horses Wire fencing is easier to build and less costly panicky horse can easily get tangled til it causing severe leg injuries strand of electric wire nm along the top of these fences or foot lll front of them discourages fence leaners Barbed irc is poor third choice but can be made safer in lwo ways For older horses put your first strand two and half feet above the ground This will climate many leg wounds because most kicking and stamping at flics occurs below this height STABLE lllTY Do not confine young horses with barbed wire it you do you are asking for trouble tight barbed wire fence is safer than sagging one it will often snap when horse hits it The resultant deep chest and torileg wounds are better then the possible cut tendons from leg wrapped lil barbed wire Any iltlti who values his mount will use as little barbed wire as possible When you put tip new fencing do you tic cloth to the fence and gate to remind the horse of this new boundary Are your barn tools kept out of the stable aisle and barnyard hoof on rake or fork can spring the handle 11p against the horses flank or abdomen As the frightened hoursc springs for ward his 1000 pound weight can cause the wooden handle to penetrate his hide and muscle Survival depends on the amount of internal damage and how quickly he is found if there is gap between your brace post and an outbuilding is it boarded in One lllittrytflirtiltl wedged his body into 12 inch space bet ween the barn and the end of the fence When his owner returnr ed two hours later she found him stuck half way between two fields His flanks wouldnt allow him to go forward iiis ribs wouldnt contract to allow for backward escape The fence post had to litsawed off This horse escaped with an unsightly flank that took six moii lbs to heal it could have been much worse is your barn siding secure Many older barns have loose boards in which horse can uitch his foot Steel shectcd barns should have protection at ground level wherc pawing horse can trap fellock under the bottom edge This can be as simple as mound of earth against the wall Steel should also be properly trimmed at the corners and door wavs it ca
