Sure miss it This this is like home here he said gesturing toward the younds Home for Mason is the Maritimes where he was born 40 years ago and 16 years later began to sing and play the blues Hes been doing it steadily ever since Over year ago though he and his band made the move from Halifax to Toronto It was supposed to be temporary Thats not how it turned out We just came up to do the El Mocambo and the Colonial In between we did the Peter Gzowski show We were supposed to go back to Halifax after the Mocambo but we started getting booked all over the place Weve been working out of Toronto ever since Mason explained during an in terview at Horseshoe Valley where he and his fiveman band entertained Friday and Saturday Theyve been held over for another three nights this week Wednesday Thursday and Friday Mason isnt exactly overjoyed to be based in Toronto Musically though it was an opportunity too goodtopassup You go from Halifax to Toronto to get recognized in Halifax And you go from to Toronto to New York to get recognized in Toronto This isa strange business almost forced the band to come out here But were out to do something and thats why we came You could be the best blues band in the world in Halifax but whos gonna know Mason admits to being surprised by the warm reception the band has had in theeast Blues isnt your everyday music For some of the laces weve played its the wrong music thats for sure think its coming back though People are listening to it again dragging along friends to hear us You have conversions its almost like church work People who hated blues who were just there to be with friends started coming back The Maritimes where Mason built his reputation is no more blues hotbed than anywhere else in the country hesays We were strange down there too No place is hot spot for the blues But Id been playing it so long there people started to like and understand it Blues whole blues and nothing but the blues Thats what Mason and band deliver With stetson on head paunchy body swaying gently and cigarette at hand for quick puff between verses Mason resembles Ronnie Hawkins as he grabs the microphone and rips into familiar selections like Rider Tobacco Road Hard Times and The Thrill Is Gone Mason was once member of Hawkins band He also played with blues great John Lee Hooker for spell during that era the late 19503 and wrly 605 Music in general has changed considerably since then but not Masons All hes ever wanted to play is blues regardless of the trends He dislikes most rock loathes disco Since moving to Toronto last year Mason and band have played almost every major club in the rovince starting with the Co onial We started at the top Ill tell you the first time was ever scared in my life was when we played the Colonial Just the thought of all the iople who had played there fore was enough to make me nervous With strong Ontario and Quebec followings now complementing his East Coast popularity Mason is looking west He wants to be national name and that market hasnt yet been tapped Still his thoughts this night are of the Maritimes which the group will not visit again until August and only then tor the duration 01 series of concerts Well probably move back home again he says without elaborating on when As for now theres work to do blues to popularize reputation to establish Dutch Mason 24 years on the stage expects to be there while yet As he puts it Im just gonna keep playing until cant play no more Quartet it must be amply clear to all lovers of this sublime form of the art that something
