gtL we we Fearless predictions By no HARPER Chay Its that time of the year again the time when make few predictions for the New Year In the past havent had very much luck with my predictions but will give it one more try HOCKEY will predict that in 1980 the NHL Players Association Wlll call strike that will last for several games My reason for predicting this is that cant see how the management of the NHL teams can put up with the inferior play that the players are prtiducinglthis year The management as to make some drastic changes in order to get fan support yet as soon as management starts to change things the players will rebel and with the strong association they have today they will refuse to play until they are satisfied with the conditions This will be very bad for hockey in general My second prediction in the sphere of hockey is that the Toronto Maple Leafs will get rid of Palmateer while he still is thought of as top class goalie It is my opinion that Punch lmlach knows too much about hockey to keep what is supposed to be star goalkeeper when he is playing the calibre of hockey he has this year Bruins defeated the Leafs 100 in Boston recently and Palmateer faced 41 shots on the net It is my belief that top goalie will not be scored on once in every four shots Also in the game against Detroit in Toronto last week Palmateer twice carried the puck out to the blue line He got caught out there the second time he tried it and the Leafs were very fortunate not to have been scored on Mike was continually out of position Good goalkeepers just dont do these things STANLEY lP Although the Philadelphia Flyers have not lost game in the last 31 am going to take the Buffalo Sabres to win the Stanley Cup believe they have the balance and the coaching to go all the way and although Toronto fans may not agree with me think the help of Roger Nielson for Buf falo will make them the team to beat this season OLYMPICGAMES The Canadian Olympic team will not fare very well in either the Winter Olympics in Lake Placid or the Summer Olympics in Moscow Swimming and gymanastics will be among their strongest sports but unfortunately feel that they will fall short of getting into the medal class GREY ll The Grey up will come back to the East in 1980 when Hamilton defeats Edmonton The Ballardowned team was getting on the right track last season and we can look for much improvement in the New Year TORONTOAItGONAlTS Argos will have another drastic year with change once again of their coaches cant see how they can improve their team as along as they continually change players good team tnust get used to each other and learn each others moves The Argos make too many major changes and that also goes for the coaching CYCLING predict big things in cycling for the Barrie area in 1980 Plans are underway at the present time for touring club in the area and from that some riders should develop into good racers Several schools will be holding cycling seminars as well as safety programs in 1980 and lot of cycling interest should develop from this look for good year in cycling BASEBALL In baseball predict that the Toronto Blue Jays will get out of the cellar and that the Montreal Expos will be close once again to making the World Series but will just fall short as they did this year And finally will also predict that at least half of my predictions will come true even thouin my track record is very poor in the prediction department would also like to take this opportunity to wish good sports everywhere Very Happy New Year sports shorts Colts tire program Two weeks ago Brock McCauley gave us some of the conditioning secrets that keep his horses in the red in Quarter Horse circles This week Milo Heatherington gives us the condi tioning tips he has learned in over 60 years ex perience with horses If horse is half starved when you break him sure hes easy to train but when you feed him up hes only half broke says Milo Heatherington man who has been working horses since 1910 when he learned to drive his fathers team At an age when most men are content to dream by the fire 80yearold Heatherington trains and shows Quarter Horses Arabs Hackneys and Standardbreds at Triple Stock Farms near Toronto Ontario During the winter months he conducts training clinics and prepares his clients horss for early spring shows and competitive trail rides For Heatherington its simple good business to have his mounts in show shape throughout the year He feels that any conditioning program depends on proper feeding exercise and daily care TWO QUARTS 0F CORN During the winter Heatherington feeds his horses two quarts of corn two of oats either crushed or rolled and two quarts of bran at their twicedaily feeding time He feels the corn helps keep his horses warm during the winter months Heatherington adds little bonemeal plus teaspoon of pickling salt and one of baking soda to the grain then drops fiveinch flake of hay into each horses manger On this food plus regular dose of Fowlers Solution Heatherington finds his horses shed hair throughout the year He buys Fowlers Solution solution of potassium arsenite at his local pharmacy Each horse gets 10 to 15 drops daily for 21 days then gets today lay off Fowlers Solution used to be used as fever remedy or anemia treatment in humans Heatherington finds it prevents his horses from growing thick winter coat Ive tried other things he says Ive always gone back Four courts booked solid Racquet Sports grow in popularity Squash and racquetball are two of the most popular sports at the Barrie YM YWCA according to pro gram director Dave Garner The two racquetball courts at the were installed in Ju ly 1977 and in October 1978 the two squash courts were added Along with squash court at the Barrie Racquet Club they are the only courts in Barrie BOOKEISLH Our squash and racquet ball courts are booked solid throughout the week Garner said The has the capacity to handle 144 people day on the four courts think that those two sports are growing in popularity because they give people chance to get good exercise and they are also funGarner said Garner said the sports are enjoyed by people of both sexes and of all ages He said the membership at the is at present composed of 52 per cent women and 48 per cent men and he thinks those figures hold true in respect to the percentages par ticipating in squash and rac quetball Squash is one of the fastest growing sports in Canada with courts springing up all over the place but Garner figures at the there are slightly more people playing racquetball For obvious reasons rac quetball is the easier sport for beginners Garner said The court is bigger the rac quet head is larger and the ball has much more b0uncea beginner can step right in and play CONSULT DOCTORS Garner said he encourages members to play the two sports but warns people over 30 that they should consult their doctors before taking to the courts The program director also said that the strongly recommends that par ticipants in the two sports wear eye guards There have been quite few eye injuries in the Sports Gamer said Luckily here we have had only two eye injuries to players and they have both been minor He said it is not mandatory at the for members who book courts to wear the eye guards because it is just too hard to police However for the tournaments the eye guards are mandatory tournament at the has Davidson came into the game at 1016 of the period but had less than two minutes grace Lobanov victimized Ranger defenceman Carol Vadnais along the boards stole the puck and dumped it to Drozdetski who rapped it in at 1204 Less than five minutes later Petrov found himself in tangle of skates and players and unable to get his stick free smartly kicked the puck out to Kharlamov who scored on quick wrist shot In the third period Greschners shot ap peared to strike falling RUSSian defenceman who carried the puck into the net with him STYLES DIFFERENT Dave Maloney the Rangers captain called the Russians helluva hockey team but said the differences in hockey style are so radical that competitions like this are almost meaningless dont know what it would be like to watch two teams play that same way he said Youd be dizzy It just indicates the differences in lifestyle the way people think about things The Rangers said they were not keen about playing the game coming as it did in the mid dle of their Christmas break think they would feel differently if they had won said Mike Nykohik the assistant coach who filled in behind the bench for Fred Shcro injured in fall at home earlier this week The Red Army team on fourgame tour plays New York Islanders on Saturday and take on Montreal Canadiens on New Years Eve repeat of their memorable match on the last night of 1975 that ended in 55 tie The team finishes the trip with game against Buf falo Sabres on Jan Since his feed and his warm barn prevent his horses from growing thick winter coats Heatherington clips only the rough hairs around the face and ears And if the horses have little hair on their legs well boot them He feels horse worries more about his feed than about anything else Because of this Heatherington advises horseman to plan their feeding times so they run smoothly every day EAT BEFORE WORK Since he likes to start training at am Heatherington feeds at 430 He says this gives the horses enough time to eat before theyre worked The evening feed comes 12 hours later at 430 pm so the horses have enough time to eat before afterdinner customers again disturb them Heatherington says this system of feeding saves him money theres no waste At the shows we hold our own for condition Most peo ple feed food thats twice as clear He says it doesnt matter what time the horses are fed as long as its regular and the feedings are 12 hours apart and the horses have free access to water Heatherington worms according to the condi tion of the horses if theyve got somethin give them dosethe less worm powder you put in the less poison you put in During the winter colts are worked indoors until heyre broke enough to go out Then theyr driven with an experienced hose Heather ington frequently drives 25 miles day even during the coldest winter days He feels this muscles the colts and teaches them to be sensi ble in traffic After drive the sweating horses are rubbed down with towel or straw until theyre dry If Heatherington feels they may be chilled he gives them teaspoon of some kind of stimulant Rye whiskey works well For him winter conditioning is just an exten sion of sound yearround program thats result of years of experience handling and training horses Maureen Balcombe prepares to slam forehand on the squash court program director Dave Garner says there are at least as many women as men making use of the tour squash and rac quetball courts at the Examiner Photos by Tony Ponocci and Drayl aw sttm Young Gavin Horner shows his backhand form during squash match at the Barrie The hopes to get junior racquet program going in the near future just been completed and another is on the agenda for early in the new year There are also clinics in both sports planned Garner also said he wants to start junior rac quet program at the as soon as possible The popularity of the two sports has certainly hel membership he saidpgl think people enjoy them because although some sports you can play for only so long squash and racquet ball you can play almost forever
