Mother of ex ell Studentspunished twice By TERRY FIELD Of The Examiner The Simeoe County Board of Education has made scapegoats of three students expelled for involve ment with illicit drugs to coverup lack of action on the drug problem at Midland Secondary School says the mother of one of the three The drug problem up here is just unreal says Marilyn Nupponen mother of Terrell Nupponen 18 Who was charged and pleaded guilty to possession He will be sentenced Jan Im happy to see that the board is going to clean it up its past overdue Mrs Nupponen says Since the expulsion the board has established committee to examine the use of drugs by Simcoe County students and altered its policies to give prin cipals choice of directions concerning expulsions and suspensions Mrs Nupponen is angry that her son and the others lohn Cronross and Richard VIIhr were ev edb pelted out at the biue and Without first receiving warning concerning their behaviour PLNISHED TWICE She is also concerned that her son has been punished twice for one crime Once through the courts and again by the school board in an arbitrary fashion The school board wanted to make an example of them for other students at the school who are doing the same things Mrs Nupponen told The Ex aminer Midland trustee John McCullough said Thursday the board acted properly and within the bounds of the Education Act in expelling the three He dismissed the charge that the board is using the students as an example for others though he acknowledged the action may be deterrent The board will now be taking more stern stand with expulsions and have little doubt these wont be the only ones McCullough also said the committee established to study the issue demonstrates the boards desire to deal with drug use in schools COURT APPEARANCE Gronross who has been charged with trafficking and possession of restricted drug and will appear Jan is attending school in Scarborough Flohr who is charged with possession
