besides fond memories are some packets of frozen blueberries and couple of jars of maple syrup These are two things Lenore has developed taste for and cant get at home in fact she had never had blueber ries before coming to Canada Home for Lenore is Australia or more precisely ooma town with popula tion of 7500 about 400 miles south of Sydney Since last January she has been living in Barrie and attending Eastview Secon dary School as part of the Rotary Interna tional Youth Exchange Program Sponsored by the Barrie Huronia Rotary Club she is one of about 500 students who left Australia last January to study in countries such as Canada the United States South Africa Japan Germany and Brazil Lenore admits her first choice for the year abroad was France but the year spent in Barrie with as many as six families has been very good lNlSTI YIIAR In fact she says it has been fan tastic year have gotten so much out of it For one thing she has had none of the problems of having to learn new language which so often makes it difficult fora student fo fit in But fitting in and making friends as she has done also depends on the student You have to be willing to put yourself forward and be assertive otherwise you will become very lonely The schools in Australia are run on grade system much like Canada she says but schools here are definitely freer There is lot more teacherstudent participation Here you can go to teacher after school to discuss things but in my school back in Australia you just dont do that It isnt encouraged Other things which have left an impres sion on Lenore is the road system and the pace of life even in Barrie which is large town after coming from Coonia Although Australia is vast country almost as large as the US people there arent nearly as casual in travelling long distances as they are in Canada she says The nearest large city to Cooma is about one halfhours drive away much like the distance between Barrie and Toronto she says but we would never dream of driv ing up there for dinner TOLREI ONTARIO During her year Lenore has done her share of travelling to places such as Niagraa Falls Quebec City Ottawa and of course Toronto which is beautiful city so clean and organized but the highlight of her stay was the Sllmllltr spent on an island in Lake Nipissing with its pine trees and rugged scenery Execuï¬ve chosen Fridays meeting of the SinichMuskoka Life Under writers Association saw the in stallation of the 1980 ex ecutive New president of the group is Jan McCarthy who takes over from Bernard Hill of Orillia First vicepresident will be Dr Reid of Barrie and Peter Harrison of Barrie will step in as second vice president Eleven members received graduation certificates from 12 Life Underwriters Association Australian will miss some things found here FREE IN DURING THE MONTH OE DECEMBER Pium Homol Slum Spulim datum Ionm lqyairm Sam some on Bradford St When she left home last January the temperature was about 54C so hot that birds were dropping out of the sky she says However Australia does have winter season she says and yes some parts of the country do have snow and residents there do ski It is surprising how little Canadians do know about Australia she says ex pected them to know little bit more about it than just kangaroos koala bears and Olivia NewtonJohn Jan Lenore will leave Barrie for British Columbia and then on to San Francisco where she will join the other students who came to North America on the exchange program It will be good to get back she says even if the year away hasnt seemed that long She will have to pick up at school where she left off because the year at Eastview does not count academically but the time has not been wasted she says She even hopes she can convince her three younger sisters to participate in the exchange program It broadens your mind and you look at things in different way Lenore says Lenore Neal will be heading back to Australia after spending about year in
