instructors was skiing with last weekend at local Barrie ski area when onslaught of skiers travelling at fast speeds and with little control poured down the hill oblivious to the rest of the skiers on that particular slope Leaving trail of terrified onlookers and near crashes these skiers showed no concern for the havoc they were creating as they raced down the slope Fortunately in that particular instance no one was injured But with the same thing happening time and time again the odds can only hold otit for so long In ski lingo the name for this type of mad specdsters is yetis er meaning skier who skis too fast and with little or no control over his direction ability to stop atid his speed Not only does he risk his own safety he also jeopardizes the wellbeing of the rest of the skiers oit the same slope And with more and more people skiing the number of yetis in creases and so does the risk RIX II IIICI Even the better skiers on the slope can find it difficult to avotd collision with yetis For example one instructor recalled an incident couple of years ago at one of the Rare rie areas here he was teaching While instructing class the instructor left his students at the crest of the hill to observe him as he skiied down half the hill demonstrating the type of turns he was teaching them Unfortunately tinbeknownst to the instructor at the same time skier had started down the sante hill heading straight down and picking tip speed every second When the instructor finished his demonstration he stopped at hay barrier that divided the hill so he would not be in the way of other skiers making their way down the slope However as he turned to look uphill and signal one of the skiers in his class to come down he was hit ftill force by this yetis who was by now travelling about 40 miles per hours The IIISIltttv tor was knocked unconscious both his skis were broken in half the binding on one torn away completely He suffered separated shoulder concussion several bruises and sprain Thc yctis miraculously never even left his skis he hit the hay bale houncd off and kept on going never to be seen again tOIIOIPIl Ihese type of incidents are not confined by any means to the local Harrie arcas and in fact are probany more cont monplacc at the Collingwood areas where the hills are longer and skiers tend to take to hills above and be ond their skiing capabilities It seems skiing has become Iikc driving When the light changes watch otit for the other guy HOCKEY LAME TREAT What treat it was to watch the NHL game between the higheflying Philadelphia Flyers and the
