manufacturers in their search for employees is the low quality of applicants and their un willingness to make an honest effort ac cording to recent government report Barrie is one of 33 cities surveyed in report by the Ontario Manpower Commission on the requirement and hiring plans of manufacturing industries Nine Barrie firms employing total of 1131 workers responded to the survey and three are facing total shortage of 19 skilled workers including general production assemblers machinists screw machine operators welders sales and accounting clerks plus production foreman vacuum her honor this evening cry Ontario colleges split on tentative contract By TERRY FIELD Of The Examiner Union representatives at 10 of Ontarios 22 community colleges are asking 6400 teachers to reject tentative contract agreement reached with the province following Dec mediation talks Doug Gaukroger president of the Georgian College local of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union supports the settlement and will recommend the 200 teachers at Georgian accept the pact The offer from the council of regents the governing body over the colleges is the se cond that will be taken to vote The first was turned down by the membership in November Wages were the only outstanding issue when talks resumed and the new offer calls for seven per cent increase in year one of two year deal Negotiations will reopen in May to set wage increase for year two NOT SATISFIED The union representatives at the 10 schools are not satisfied with the wage proposal Gaukroger said the seven per cent was the minimum the teachers could settle for Brrrr By RICHARD THOMAS The Examiner Barrie felt the first real bite of old man winter early this morning as the temperature dropped overnight in the city toabout 21 Temperatures well below freezing were par for the course for the area spokesman for Environment Canada in Toronto said to day with Muskoka reporting an overnight low of 24 while Wiarton and Mount Forest registered 19 and 17 on the thermometer respectively Barrie residents can expect low temperatures of between 13 and 15 again tonight said Ray Redford supervisor in the Toronto weather office but the cold snap Barrie feels bite of 2l temperatures More importantly he said the open second year allows the teachers to bargain according to economic conditions at the time rather than accept fixed increase now The pro vinces initial offer was 55 per cent for year two Representatives from each of the schools are to meet Jan to discuss the contract which is retroactive to August 31 member ship vote is scheduled for Jan 15 Gaukroger said he expects the teachers to vote according to the recommendation of their bargaining team and accept the latest offer Following rejection of the regents first of fer the teachers also voted against strike ac tion to back demands Gaukroger said so cond strike vote could be called for if the teachers turn down the new offer The inital offer was for 65 per cent in crease in year one along with the 55 for the second year The union wanted 10 per cent in the first year and eight plus costofliving allowance in year two Average salary for teachers
