to otho examiner Friday Doc14 1979 sports wheel Barrie hotbed for curling By ED HARPER Chay The Barrie area is hotbed for curlers and the past week has been busy one at the local curling clubs There have been several playoffs and bonspiels all very exciting for the fans and the local curlers The curlers of today owe debt to Manitoba curler who skipped his championship Manitoba rink to victory in the Brier in 1949 and by doing so he became the first man to win the coveted curling championship three times The Brier or to give it its full title Macdonalds Brier Tankard is the most fiercelycontested event in the Cana dian curling calendar The trophy was intended to stimulate and encourage friendly competition between the teams of Eastern and Western Canada and the championships have certainly succeeded in this aim At the first competition at the Granite Club in Toronto eight rinks competed seven from Eastern Canada and one from the West before mere handful of spectators Now every province is represented and the crowds number in the tens of thousands IIALF MILLION CURLERS When the first Brier was held in 1927 there were about 90000 curlers in all of Canada today the figure is well over half million Ken Watson was the curler who skipped his rink to victory in 1949 He was born and bred in Manitoba and started to curl at the age of 15 He entered his first Manitoba bonspiel in 1923 and won his first trophy in 1926 at the age of 21 Ken Watson was great strategist and innovator It was he who developed the sliding delivery At first his long slide out of the uhack was unpopular especially with the oldtime curlers and it often embroiled Watson in controversy The style however was popular with the increasing number of younger curlers who were being attracted to the game Eventually it won general acceptance so that today the long sliding delivery is almost universally used by all curlers in Cana Watson might also be said to be the first articulate expo nent of scientific curling He realized that curling is deliberate game where the time lapse between shots can build up terrific tension It is here that Watson excelled with his cool concentration and with his offensive play right to the final rock These talents brought Ken Watson and his Strathcona Club rink to the fore not only in his native Manitoba but in national curling competition as well He skipped his rink to the three Brier championships in 1936 1942 and 1949 and won the Manitoba bonspiel in the same years as well as in 1943 TAUGIIT SCHOOL For 21 years from 1922 to 1942 Ken Watson taught school in Winnipeg and it was during those years that he encourag ed curling amongst youngsters In 1939 he founded the first provincial high school bonspiel in Manitoba and he was in strumental in organizing school curling across the country So successful was he in creating enthusiasm for his beloved sport that his greatest problem was to keep proper perspective in his pupils so that curling did not supersede school work When schoolboys take up curling he once remarked they have little time for anything else The same could also be said for many adult curlers once bitten with the bug the game becomes lifelong passion Ken Watson shared his knowledge of the sport with others For many years starting in 1953 he was frequent con tributor to the sports columns of the Toronto Telegram He also produced several books and in 1950 he wrote his popular manual Ken Watson on Curling which has sold over 150000 copies He was active in the sport for over 50 years but his influence will last
