Cathy Heather Examiner sports writer The seats were packed There wasnt even any standing room available Scalpers selling tickets were having hey day getting at least $100 for pair of golds And the fans were up for the game unusually vocal in their support of the Toronto Maple Leafs as they took to the ice in what has traditionally been one of the strongest rivalries in the NHL game between the Leafs and les Canadiens And in the end the Leafs had accomplished something they hadnt done in three years beaten the Canadiens in Maple Leaf Gardens Paul Meger Barrie resident for many years now knows what it is like to be Canadien and be beaten in Maple Leaf Gardens Meger played with the Montreal Canadiens from 195054 He was playing the night that Bill Barilko scored the overtime goal for the Leafs in the Stanley Cup inals giving the Leafs not only the game but the Cup as well BLEW ROOF OFF The fans were up in the airthey almost blew the roof off when Barilko scored recalled Meger remember had Just come off the ice with linemates Bernie Boom Boom Geoffrion tnow coach of Canadiens and Billy Reay We had killed abut one minute of our penalty But then Torontos Todd Sloan scored while we were still Shorthanded to tie the game And they beat us in overtime While Meger acknowledges that even during his playing days With the Canadiens the rivalry between Montreal and Toronto was quite strong he notes that in league where on ly SIX teams played you couldnt help but have rivalry with every team fBecause Toronto and Montreal were both Canadian Cities and very close together the rivalry between us was greater than with other cities says Meger But we wanted to beat the pants off Chicago or Boston toono mat ter where we went the games were close and the arenas were packed Meger and his wife Betty Barrie native have lived in this city since Meger came here from his home town near Winnipeg Manitoba to play with the Barrie Flyers coached then by Hap Emms Meger feels that playing with the Flycrs who were top Junior team at that time we good stepping stone to becoming professional player GIVES EMMS REDII came to the Barrie team which was sponsored by Buf falo Bisons of the American Hockey league in 1946 recall ed Meger The team was really goodwe went to the Memorial Cup finals and the Ontario finals in the years played If was to give anybody any credit down the line for helping me become National Hockey League player it would be Hap Emms He knew what to expect in the NHL and helped lot of us become NHL players He was an ex cellent coach Meger moved from the Barrie Flyers to the Buffalo Bisons where he played for year and half After his first year with Buffalo in which he won the rookie of the year award his right were bought by the Canadiens The next The Barrie CoOp Midget forwards ent all came skating behind the Thornhill de ence as they took an easy 60 victory in YorkSimcoe ac tion at Dunlap Street Arena Tuesday night In on Former Hab lost to Leafs year he played about 20 games for the Habs In his first full season in the NHL he played with Canadiens when they met Toronto for the Stanley Cup which Toronto won And his linemate Geoffrion won the Calder trophy as the NHLs top rookie Meger played with some of the greatest names in Cana diens history Geoffrion Doug Harvey Rocket Richard Jacques Plante Butch Bouchard and Jean Beliveau had an excellent career for four years playing in the NHL was more than thought it could be you can dream and all of sudden the dream is real Winning the Stanley Cup in 195253 with Canadiens is hard to describe was in seventh heaven It was like buying lottery ticket you buy it to win million played in the NHL to win Stanley Cu Meger had mixed reaction when he learned that his former linemate Geoffrion was hired to coach the Cana diens HOT HEADED When he was player he was hotheaded said Meger But now were older weve gained lot of experience and really dont think you could predict how Geoffrion would do you really have to wait and see what happens But think he must have had something going for him as coach or the Canadiens wouldnt have picked him give him credit for taking the job those are big shoes to fill Megers NHL career ended tragically one night in Boston He and another Boston player fell to the ice and the heel of the Boston players skate blade dug into Megers skull For an entire year Megers life was on the line He was hospitalized and had four operations including one which removed small part of his brain that was badly damaged But he recovered slowly and moved back to Barrie for good know how lucky am said Meger who works in ap Bath examiner Wednesday Dec 121979 15 the Barrierinks el Marion Steckley lead for Karen Browns Barrie Curling club rink concentrates on that he hasnt been to game between Mon treal and Toronto for few years now With the passage of time the incentive to go decreases as he knows fewer and fewer players couple of years ago he had an enjoyable time when he went down to the Gardens to see the Montreal Oldtimers play Meger knew half the team and relived few memories later with them While he keeps on up on news of the various teams he rarely watches the games on tv Meger coached the bantams in the Barrie Minor Hockey Association for several years but recently gave up that ac tivity in favor of trying something newcurling But guess if you asked me Im still real Montreal fan says Meger Luckily for Meger he wasnt on hand to witness the fall of Canadiens week ago inthe Gardens Being Habs fan it was painful and disappointing became the coach of Montreal Canadiens Bernie Geoffrion said the job was the only one he ever had wanted He welcomed the pressure from the nononsense fans and media in the National Hockey Leagues most demanding city He welcomed the challenging prospect of heading the Cana diens toward recordtying fifth consecutive cham pionship mark set from 1955 56 through 195960 by the Montreal teams of which he was member However Geoffrion spent most of Monday night in meet ings with Canadiens managing director Irving Grundman and team vicepresident Toe Blake who coached Geoffrion those record years They were not discussing the balmy weather in Uniondale NY they were discussing why the Canadiens have gotten off to an uncharacteristic rocky start Chances are excellent they spent Tuesday night doing the same after Montreal dropped 41 decision to New York Island ers for their sixth consecutive winless road game It is December and the play offs are four months away Only Philadelphia Flyers un beaten in 24 games since their only loss of the season have es caped slump similar to the one the Canadiens now endure But the Its Only December excuse is not one to be em braced by champion and Montreal isnt using it now You always have to be con cerned when things are going BERNIE GEOFRION losing blues this way said Grundman We have to get the guys playing as team It leads one to wonder whether Geoffrion will get the chance to do that though the Canadiens 15 victories nine losses and six ties is not dra matically worse than the 2064 that started the 197879 cam paign nor the 1974 mark that commenced the season before GIVE CHANCE Youve got to give him chance said goalie Michel La rocque who played superbly despite this latest loss If the fans are going to call for heads think the players heads ought to roll first Defenceman Larry Robinson and left winger Bob Gainey were less inclined to express sympathy for the coach dont think theres any rea son to sympathize with any body said Robinson
