lively conversationalist who takes voice and martial arts lessons and leaves the cleaning to British housekeeper Joan Baez has changed in many ways since the 1960s when her clear sweet soprano first electrified millions and her outspoken political views shocked millions more But while shes long since shed her blue jeans and long hair for the trappings of wellheeled suburbia and motherhood the basics of her life music and humanitarian causes have never changed At 38 Miss Baez still pencil slim but her black hair now shot with gray and worn frizzy is back in the news as crusader for the first time since the war in Vietnam ended Shes trying to get aid for the starving and homeless refugees of Cambodia as well as the Vietnamese boat people HAS SAME BELIEFS But she says her current mission is an ex tension of the same nonviolent philosophy that motivated her opposition to the Vietnam war What are you going to call war she says mean its not an open declared war when you let people die at sea but it certainly isa form of violence Ive never felt proAmerican Ive never felt leftwing or rightwing Ive just been propeople Many people might have thought she drop ped out of crusading because her political ac tivities werent highly publicized after the war Miss Baez admits the postVietnam era wasnt particularly active time for her But she did travel to Russia and Ireland maintaining her support for such organiza tions as Amnesty International and the In stitute for Nonviolence which she helped found 14 years ago NOT FLASIIY For the press to know youre around you have to do some flashy thing she says And Im not interested in doing that Im go ing to do whatever work seems right If that work is raising my child want to do that well And if its making an album then want to do that well Miss Baez remains as big concert draw as ever Although she says shes started to take voice lessons because some of the high notes dont come as easily as they used to her fans certainly havent noticed And in recent years she seems even more at home on stage interspersing songs with patter that often pokes fun at her stereotyped image Ive always had sense of humor she says But she admits she found it hard to display levity in public when she was younger somehow was afraid that would negate what was saying or they wouldnt take me seriously she says show biz Singer
