Flyers goalie John Collins decided to take out his frustra tions on Terriers Rick Smith with whom he had had several minor alterations throughout the game Collins was punching Smith pretty badly and the linesmen couldnt break them up realted Flyers playercoach Paul Regan One of their players Robbie Street left their bench and as soon as that happened our bench emptied and so did theirs Regan felt that bad of ficiating was big factor in precipitating the third period brawl In my opinion it was poor ly officiated gme said Regan He the referee wasnt call ing anything and you could just see it building up to what hap pened Regan commented that the referees interpreted the rules in way he had never seen before when they assessed penalties to the teams once the brawl had Ditiatin defeats go home happy TORONTO CP Montreal Expos and Atlanta Braves went home happy but most major league brass left grumbling if they had any voices left There was plenty of talking but very little action during baseballs annual weeklong winter meetings Most clubs arrived hoping to swing major trades in an effort to help themselves for the 1980 season However only 11 deals involving 30 players were made We might just as well have stayed home said general manager Spec Richardson of San Francisco Giants That summed up the feelings of most observers great deal of money was wasted Even with interleague trading the wheels grinded to nearhalt with the least productive winter meeting in memory At least half of the major league clubs packed up and headed home early Friday Ev eryone agreed on one thing in tricate contracts with special clauses many under the agree ment with the players associ ation prevented possible deals So did the fact that another in terleague trading period will run As the hockey season progresses Darryl Slys Coll ingwood Shipbuilders have been demonstrating more and more their superiority over rival clubs Slys coaching has been given major credit The former Barrie Flyer star player and pilot has his team playing determined brand of hockey somehting like he did for the senior Flyers when they captured the Allan cup champion ship few years ago At present the Flyers are battling desperately to stay within hailing distance of the pacesetting Shipbuilders in the Georgian Bay intermediate hockey league standings While they dropped 63 verdict to the leaders in their last clash at Collingwood Paul Regans charges have shown they can turn the tables when clicking Bob Coulson led Flyers to an earlier 53 win at the Dunlop Street Arena over the highflying firstplacers FLYERS FAREI BETTER In fact Flyers have fared much better than any other club against the Shipbuilders so far Wayne Rutledges Orillia squad have managed to take only one out of four games from Slys pesky team Playing coach Regan who played hockey under Slys tutorship for several hectic seasons here in Barrie has deep respect for the ability of the Collingwood pilot But he is still hopeful his Flyers will yet be able to overhaul the leaders The season is still young and steady improvement can often accomplish the unexpected with the right deter mination and effort Regan has helped outstanding Barrie teams win championship honors in the past and with good support can undoubtedly do so again The Flyers are engaged in crucial series with their old rivals from Orillia
