DAILY FLIGHTS Collair which offers daily flights between Collingwood Muskoka and Toronto Island Airport has not yet been able to include the new airport in Parry Sound on its itinerary for these very smaller Ministry experts estimated there are 35 per cent fewer animals now than in 1965 Thursdays meeting in the Consumers Gas building on Ferris Lane was intended to tell people about the moose pro blems and ask them for their suggetions to help the situation Toth said many suggestions were very helpful Hunters recommended restricting moose hunting seasons Overharvesting is probably major reason for declining herd numbers said Toth Habitat destruction is also contributingfactor FEW AREAS There are very few areas that arent accessible any more said Toth Twenty years ago we didnt have snowmobiles and moose were quite safe in most areas You might have to snowshoe 10 or 15 Responsibility of newspapers to present positive news too By DENNIS LANTIIIER Of The Examiner Negativism has plagued journalism too long and newspapers should be catylist in telling us things as they really are rather than merely being prophets of doom and gloom says Examiner publisher Bruce Rowland Thursday there have been recent examples of blatant distortion in the media that make him wonder when we are being told the truth in fair and objective manner Rowland cited examples including the 1974 federal election when Conservative party leader Robert Stanfield was pictured fumbl ing football implying he was fumbler and bumbler The Prime Minister at the time Pierre Trudeau on the other hand was shown per forming perfect jack knife dive off diving board in Penticton BC implying he was superstar who could perform admirably under pressure Rowland said It wasnt made clear though that Stanfield had caught something like six out of seven football passes thrown his way Rowland said During campaign two years earlier David Lewis referred to major Canadian corporations businesses and welfare bums Rowland said The media picked up on the slogan so that for the past seven years business has been Spiro Agnew brought all this home in the early 19705 in particularly heated anti said media speech and won surprisingly strong support from many Americans Rowland In time said Rowland we forget who we are and what we are because we are constant ly bombarded with the negative aspects of Rowland told the Rotary Club of Barrie life It is no wonder we have lost much of our selfconfidence he added However the North American media re mains the last truly free area of expression and opinion left in the world he said ACCESS SHRINKS The major wire services access to world countries has shrunk from 1945 total of 75 per cent to just 25 per cent today The major Totalitarian governments find their pur poses and aims are much better suited under terms of rigorous censorship said Rowland Not just few reporters have died in re reason for the cutback cent years trying to cover world that seems in constant turmoil he said Press censorship without real and just cause robs all democratic supporters of basic right to know said Rowland as ripoff he said The overwhelming majority of newspaper and media managers are concerned with creating balance in their news presentation Meeting that balance between negative and positive news is responsibility that is both card prizes another turkey as door prize and the two booby prizes were hams Examiner Photos by Peter Roberts north of Highway 11 would however contain 5000 foot long runway capable of handling the aircraft REZONE LAND Barrie general committee approved the scheme Thurs day although it still must be ratified by council next Mon day Oro Township will also have to agree to rezone the land Land acquisition and planning would take place in 1980 and construction would start the following year Collair would conduct its own marketing survey Smith said and if it proved favorable the company could start ser vicing the Barrie Airport as soon as it opens poviding federal regulations governing adequate facilities are met Smith described the decision to go ahead with the airport as positive step and one which should certainly do good things for the community in attracting industry It would be good for Orillia to go in on it too he said That city is still considering the airport as cost sharing venture with Barrie but has made no decision on the matter to date District speaks with Bing Gibson of Alliston on the topic of age iden tification of moose by looking at the jaw bone The ministry held an open house discussion at the Consumers Gas Centre Thursday on the topic of dwindling moose population in Ontario Approximately peo ple attended Examiner Photo miles to get to them Now its 30 or 40 minute ride on ski doc Many other areas are ac cessible by airplanes and helicopters he said Restricting accessibility to moose zones would reduce the harvest Persons attending the meeting suggested banning all terrain vehicles from moose hunts and prohibiting hunters from using logging roads Hunters recommended holding alternate seasons The government could open moose season in one district this year and close it another area The following year the opening would reverse Selective harvest would also help the population said Toth Hunters suggested killing on ly bulls or bulls and calves sparing the cows Toth said bull and calf season is probably one of the best suggestions Killing only bulls would deprive cows of mating and if overharvested the result could be severely reduced reproducton rate Hunting bulls and calves spreads the harvest and more Now its official bulls should survrve he said One bull can mate with 10 to 15 cows Hunting calves is also preferable because they are the most prone to natural death during the first year By thinn ing their numbers through hun ting the calves stand better chance of survival Toth said bull and calf seasons have been successful in many areas Only few moose are found In Simcoe County The nearest major moose population is in thed Parry Sound District he sai At the official opening of the new Sunny Park Childrens Centre is Mayor Ross Archer left who is helping
