Cathy Heather Examiner sports writer Committee sets main objectives Skiing curling hockey skating all activities that many of us partICIpate in this winter season But for the physically disabled In Barrie participating in any of these activities takes lot more than putting on an overcoat getting in the car and taking off What the Barrie committee for the Phy5ically Disabled which had its first meeting last night at Sunnidale Centre hopes to see take off is their plan to get the physically disabled involved in community recreation The committee which includes four members of the Bar rie Association for the Disabled who attended the Co Operating for Change Conference in Toronto in November setup aims and objectives for getting the physically disabl ed Involved in community recreation The big barriers to overcome Transportation motivation and accessibility We are assuming that the physically disabled are the same as everyone said Debbie Watson coordinator of Special Services in the Barrie recreation depart ment Most people enjoy some form of recreation so why should the physically disabled be left out The committee stressed the idea of integration with nondisabled persons when discussing physical ly disabled participation in community recrea tional activities WWII AT59 WILL TAKE TIME spuiilsirius The process Ojimegra because it involves an attion will take time titude change on the part of many people said Watson There are many things to be considered both by the disabled person who wants to participate and the service or agency that offers the various programs Some of the questions the disabled consumer must ask are what are my interest what programes are available what is accessible and can get help The agency must consider whether or not to offer recreation opportunities for the entire community finding accessible locations for their programs varying levels in their programs and staff awareness of extra needs of the people However it seems apparent that to make any progress in implementing programs where the physically disabled can participate with nondisabled persons advocacy plays an important role Advocacy can take several forms One is individual it involves volunteer working on onetoone basis speaking for one individual member of community agency could also act in the same role only on behalf of group of persons advocating for community use of facilities Or collective groupof individuals could take up the disabled cause use of recreation facilities and programs Last but not least is the disabled persons themselves SELFHELP Selfhelp is very important said Shirley Sporle physically disabled person herself and one of those who at tended the conference Selfhelp is really more important than help from others But we also must motivate ourselves Gunnards Oskalns who is also physically disabled and committee member agreed with Sporle We can help each other and thereby help ourselves said lskalns We have to be aware of being active in our community Recreational activity is positive thing Dave Higgins another committee member stressed the idea of integregation instead of segregation The disabled wants to be recognized just like everyone else said Higgins In fact fighting peoples prejudices and underestimation of the physically handicappeds abilities are two big obstacles the committee will have to hurdle in their objec tive of getting the disabled involved in community recrea tion activities But with 1981 the International Year of the Disabled approaching Watson thinks that the public will become more aware of the disabled WILL LEARN MORE Public education with respect to the physically han dicapped is important to our aims said Watson But there will be lot of information and more awareness of the disabled before 1981 year just like this year with the child 1979 was International Year of the Child The physically disabled will be more visiable and as result people will learn more about them One person who wishes she could have learned more about what to do with physically handicapped person is June Tolles Tolles who attended the meeting has physically disabled child 11 years old Its ridiculous that you have to leave your own communi ty to learn about dealing with disabled persons said Tolles This is where you are going to raise your child Right now there is nothing for the disabled When my son was younger wanted to take him to day care centres to be with other kids But they wouldnt let me He is interested in recreation but cant send him to camp hes never been without me for one day how could let him go away for two weeks Obviously the committee has long way to go but there were some solid aims stated at the meeting The first is to find out where the disabled are how many 1600 was figure mentioned for Simcoe County and get information to them more difficult task than it might appear Then the committee wants to know what the disabled want in the form of recreation We dont need separate programs for them but wedo need advocates to help them participate in these recreation activities said Watson Lynns two goals Sweep all ttireeggmes Eastview Pat Smiley left of Eastview just Colts need big month When the Barrie Colts host the Brampton Chevys Thursday night at Dunlop Street Arena they will be in dire need of vic tory Latest statistics released by the OHA Central Junior League show the Colts in ninth place Only eight of the 12 teams will qualify for the playoffs when the regular schedule is com pleted To date the Colts have played 21 games The game against Brampton will mark the halfway point of their season GRUELLING MONTII The Colts have gone through gruelling November in which they earned nine of possible 22 points However the Colts have not faced team with losing record since they hosted the Thornhill Thunderbirds way back on November 15 and the Thunderbirds are only one game under In the month of December the Colts will play only seven hockey games Only one of those seven games against the first place StreetsvilleDerbys may be too much to ask the Colts to win The remaining six are against teams that the Colts have shown they can defeat If the Colts are to have any control at all over their own destiny they will have to take nine or 10 points in those seven games Looking through the statistics it is not hard to see where the problem lies The Colts have allowed six goals game Only two teams the lowly Acton Sabres and Milton Flyers have poorer defensive record than the Colts BOWMAN LEADING Rick Bowman the Colts captain was still the leading scorer at the point the stats were released He had 42 points which Bantams winners gave him slim twopoint bulge over Bramptons John Luimes and Georgetowns Dave McGilloway Bowmans linemate
