Examiner sports writer Facilities needed for the disabled When it comes to being left out in the cold there is com munity of people within Barrie who probably know that story best the disabled While some citizens complain that recreational and athletic facilities in Barrie are insufficient for the disabled according to Debbie Watson the coordinator of SpeCial Ser vices in Itarries Recreation department they are almost nonextstent And she and Simcoe Sounty program co ordinator Sadie Van Beest along with committee con sisting of ten people intend to do something about it The committee will be meeting soon to go over our aims and objectives with respect to the disabled in Barrie says Watson One thing know well be talking about is inclu sion of the disabled into community projects IIIlf PROGRAMS Watson uses the swimming program at the YMYWCA as an example saying that she would like to see some of the disabled take part in the many classes offered at the ltight now Watson claims there are no recreational facilities accessible to the disabled and she would like to see that changed We dont want to start our own recreational programs but there is nothing going on at the community level that the disabled can take part in But know it takes time and we have to have lot of patience Watson realizes that having the disabled participate with nonhandicaptwd people would need extra volunteers to help the disabled out for instance in swimming class But if there are volunteers willing to help out why separate the disabled argUes Watson It could be argued that putting the disabled into swimmv ing class with nonhandicaprxd persons might be unfair to both the disabled and the nondisabled as it would slow down the progress for the nondisabled while pushing the disabled persons perhaps beyond their abilities Well we wouldnt put someone in situation where they couldnt cope is Watsons reply Really you cant just generalize about something you have to deal with the in dividual you just cant group them all together and say this wouldnt work ANGLES EXAMINEI The effort of the committee will not be haphazard there are surveys going on that will be evaluated and many dif fercnt angles will be examined As Watson says We have to look at whats going on and how we can get the disabled involved One thing that Watson thinks will help get them involved is the idea presently being surveyed by Becst of an advocate for the community Advocacy in the community would mean that person would represent the disabled in particular community says Watson That way they could have voice in what happens Watson doesnt see any problem in getting advocates as she believes that the more and more the community becomes aware of the disabled the more people will be in tercsted in speaking on their behalf While the committee has yet to meet their intentions are admirable It would be nice to see the disabled integrated iii to community programs whether they are recreational athletic or interest groups 1981 is the International Year of the Disabled and hopefully Barrie will be leader by that time SlltlltIS Barrie may be small in comparison to city like Toronto but per capita Barrie hosts large number of people who have excelled in athletic endeavours and the numbers keep growing People like Bcp Guidolin Ron Ilog garth Bill Little Mike Gartncr Red Storey Dan Maloney Bill Stewart
