diagnosed and few cures prescribed by concerned people during panel discussion at the Holiday inn Saturday The status of the lakes cold water fishery is severe indica tion of how sick Lake Simcoe is said Ron Desjardinc biologist with the ministry of natural resources esjardine told delegates at the convention of the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters the whitefish population has ben reduced from 130000 during the mid 19605 to 3600 in 1977 and is facing extinction The ministry is considering stocking Whitefish in the near future he said Lake trout is entirely dependent on stocking and for the past three years close to 100000 yearlings and twoyearooids have been stocked annually although this year the number was down because of problem iii thehatchery increases in the number of yellow perch and small mouth bass periodic algae seums and the lack of water clarity all add up to one thing he says 77 deterioration in the quality of the water The lake ispiainly telling us that something is wrong No young fish are making through to adulthood he said The ministrys goal is to improve the water quality through better sewage treatment and reduced amount of phosphorus enteringthelake liesjardinesaid REDLCEI itLMith Right now 103 tons of phosphorus is dumped into Lake Sim coe annually said Howard Shillington chairman of the lake Simcoe touchiciiing Pollution Control Conference He said this figure will be reduced but that reduction is long trial re quiring lot of money The accidental introduction of smelt iii Lake Simcoe in 1962 by sortie unknown means has hurt the fish population by competing wztti more valuable species for food said Desjar dine He said the smelt population peaked in 1970 and the number now fluctuates Stocking is key program for now but is considered ban daid treatment until water quality improves he said Pm and take fishing may have its place but not in Lake Simcoe he said We cant go on covering up the problem The ministry is striving for rehabilitated fish community that is stable diverse and reproductive said Desjardine Shillington is encouraged by the provincial governments response to the Lake Simcoechhiming report submitted in April and said the suggestions willbe given heed resulting in policy recommendations early next year Both he and Desjardine emphasize that the cleanup is not an ovemigit job The report is self defeating and doesnt discuss control of development on the lake said Marvin Geist president of the Bell Cedar Ratepayers Association OORDINATE CLEAN LP He said there are 37 political entities along the lake and there must be central body to coordinate the clean ucp The cherished notion of crystal take an getting away from it all is not there as it used to be he said Somebody bet ter start spending some money If not were all loosers Geist said cottagers are not obstructionists but want orderly development of the iakeshore and Innisfil Townships plan to increase the population of Alcona Beach from 3000 to between 7000 and 15000 puts too much pressure on the lake Although he understands innisfils need for tax base in the face of annexation it doesnt make sense to have city there he said That part of lnnisfiis proposed official plan and the townships restrictions against yearround cottagers have put the ratepayers association in battle situation Geist said The township discourages cottagers from using residences all yearlong and because cottagers pay taxes all yearlong this is unfair Geist claims COTTAGERS WONT HURT He said the small number of cottagers who would like to retire to their Innisfil cottages wont hurt the lake like the Alccna expansion would Were putting the pressure on he said Geist encouraged the use of catch basins and fertilizers in the Holland Marsh where theres not much top soil left he said This would be done he said to prevent agricultural runoff storm water settling ponds updated sewage treatment plants inspection of septic tank systems and reduction of phosphorus input from 103 to 95 tons to help check the pollution of Lake Simcoe Shillington noted that four million people are within days joumey of Lake Simcoe and the government must start con sidering how many people the lake can accommodate He also noted the importance of agitators in bringing to the governments attention the severity of the problem Happy day in
