in his third year with the Axernen and this past season was named to an all confeience offensive guard The competi tion for Acadia in the follege Howl will be the lniversity of Western Ontario Mustangs SEtthl IHII It is the second time in Littles three year career lliat the Axenien have riiade it to the ollege Howl They went there during Lit tles freshman year but lost The Axemen have had very impressive record during Littles career there but it is not as good as the record compiled by the senior Redskins during Littles years there In all three years Little played for the Redskins they were iItSSA champions The fact that Little has gone on to become an excellent college player does not stir prise his high school coaches Dave Garland and Bruce larke Hill was all football Garland said He thought about little else he was totally dedicated While at Central Little went both ways playing offensive tackle and middle linebacker AGGRESSIVE ANT TOLUII He was very aggressive and tough player who had plenty of siZe said Clarke who coaches the defense actually thought he was better on defense than he was on offense The coach said he made some of the most ferocious but clean tackles he has ever seen dont know if would say he is the best player we ever had Garland said but he is certainly among the best While at Central Little collected many awards Aside from the team honors he also won the Laking Trophy which goes annual ly to the outstanding male athlete and also the lteino Award which goes to the best player in the lBSSA final By ATHY HEATHER OfThe Examiner In 1966 colleges were offiCially born in Ontario Unfortunate ly the act that brought in colleges didnt even consider athletic facilities for the colleges And that has been an increasing pro blem ever since The only colleges that got athletic facilities in the first few years of operation were the ones that inherited them says Jim Martin assistant athletic director at Barries Georgian Col lege Fanshawe in London is an example they used to be Fanshawe Polytechnical Institute When they turned into Fan shawenCollege they took over what athletic facilities there were POSTSTAMP SIZED Georgian College had no such luck The athletic department practically had to beg borrow and steal to get what Martin calls the poststamp sized gym the college has now and the training room installed three years ago Now the department along with the college is trying to get funding for an athletic Sly gunning for Flygcs complex at the school While having the idCllllleS would be big step in enlarging the athletic program at Georgian increased enrolment is major factor in the expansion Most of the athletic budget money comes from students ac tivity tees explained Martin The college does give us some money to hire coaches and for travel expenses and our salaries But the bulk of the money we use for varsity teams and intramural programs comes directly from the students Because of expense Georgian has had to cut down on the number and type of varsity teams which are teams competing in the Ontario College Athletic Association events it can field For instance Georgian used to compete in OCAA in both mens hockey and basketball but in 1975 both teams were dropped The mens hockey team planned to enter but had to drop out because of lack of players The penalty was stiff one the KAA fined the college and also suspended them for two years from the league We never commit ourselves to varsity sport in OCAA until we know we have competent individuals to make up the team Old friends set to battle By TONY PANACCI Of The Examiner Friday nights hockey game between the Barrie Flvers and Collingwood Shipbuilders pits old friends and teammates against one another for the first time since the Georgian Bay In termediate Hockey League was born Darryl Sly former mentor of the Flyers and now holding the reigns in Collingwood said his club would like nothing more than to down the Flyers Well be gunning to beat the Flyers Sly said Playing the Flyers has been big thing with us since the season began Sly will be bringing the hotest team in the league into Dunlop Street Arena Tuesday night the Shipbuilders were downed 52 by the Dundas Merchants It was only their second loss in 10 outings Sly said his club is much improved from last years squad which was the runaway pennant winner in the Intermediate league We have added lot of talent at our club Sly said Among the added talent are couple of former Flyeis Les Burgess and Wayne King Burgess had originally signed with the Flyers for this year However they had to give him up to sign Terrv Agnew Bob Beard and Ken Knapton who all skated with the Shipbuilders last year The anchor of that defense is former pro Ian McKegney who Sly says is the best amateur blueliner in North America Last year McKegney was definitely the stalwart of the Collingwood squad Also on the blueline is Steve Sly veteran who has spentmOst of his playing career with the Flyers The team also picked up solid defenseman in Peter Dunbar The Ilyers on the other hand have had trouble at the blueline since the season began That problem is much more evident now that Eddie Walker is not available for many of the games Both teams have plenty of players who can put the puck in the net And of course both the teams have excellent goaltending Ron Patterson another Flvcr mans the nets for the Ship biliilders and former pro Grant Cole is between the pipes for the vers Sly said he has seen the Flyer play once this season and he was impressed with what he saw They have very good club Sly said think they need little help on the blueline but they should get stronger as the season on Sly said his club is as good as any of the Senior Flyer teams he played on This is the Senior league he said All they did was change the name says Martin college has to commit to varsity sport the May before the new fall season When you drop out such as the hockey team did its costly N0 HOCKEY TEAM While hockey continues at an intramural level at Georgian with eight teams playing about three games every two weeks there is varsity mens basketball team but it doesnt play in the OCAA league It would be too ex nsive to plav in the OCAA because of travel costs hotel andxmeals said Martin who coaches the team But what were trying to work out right now is getting Kawartha league going This year were playing an exhibition schedule with six or seven teams in the Kawartha area If it works out well drop out of the Simcoe ounty league next season and play in this league Currently Georgian has varsity teams most which are what Martin refers to as tournamenttype sports For the most part play is within Georgians own region and because many of the teams such as mens and womens volleyball play in tournaments the travelling expenditures are less Obviously it is more practical for college the size of Georgian to par ticipate in these kind of varsity sports merely due to the cost factor In 1975 when we dropped out of hockey it meant being able to add mens volleyball curling expand our skiing add touch football and archery jUSt by the money we saved from being out of hockey says Martin Right now out of 27 colleges in Ontario only eight have mens hockey teams some of them as far away as Kirkland Lake The travelling costs make it just in saneto play varsity hockey lRLING NOT IIXPENSIVF For small college Georgian has done well at the varsity level winning Ontario championships in curling archery and gold medals in crosscountry and skiing While some might think that curling is an expensive sport Martin says that they run the curling program for about the same amount as womens volleyball It is an expensive sport but the number of students we have involved up to 40 justifies the expense says Martin However the crux of the problem still lies with facilities and money Martin says that unless they get new complex there will be no more programs added as there is no space no money and no staff left to handle any more than the 30 programs already operating We could probably become involved in varsity soccer if we had good field says Martin We have intramural soccer now and we have some excellent players But anything were planning now is in anticipation of correcting our facilities pro blem Oro comes back to take Coldwater The Oro Emory Miller Real Bird
