1o the examiner Tuesday Nov 1979 Examiner sports writer Face guardsa big future in hockey Ten to twelve years ago very few players in the National Hockey League wore helmets Now for the new players coming into the league helmets are mandatory Soon when the older players who dont wear helmets now retire every player in the league will sport helmet Could this same phenomena occur with the face mask Only time will tell In minor hockey all the way up to Junior face guards or masks either the cage type of the plastic visors are obligatory All players must wear these pieces of armour for protection survey was done that determined there were too many face injuries in minor hockey Thus it was felt that the players needed added protection First it was mouthguard then chinguard then plastic visor and now the Wire cage mask very similar to what many goaltenders such as the wellknown Russian netminder Vladislav Tretiak use Will the face guard follow the route of the helmet Will it move up into Junior then Junior and finally the professional leagues To partially answer this question but more to determine the general opinion of people regarding face masks asked some Barrie hockey people their opinions on this piece of equipment think that the same breeding process that took on with the hockey helmet is possible as far as the face mask is con cerned said Pete Cavill manager of Barrie Coop midgets As one generation fades out and the next fades in think it is quite possible that well see more players even in the NHL start wearing face guards Like many of the other hockey people spoke with Cavill notes that the frequency of high skicking penalties and crosschecking penalties in minor hockey have increased since face masks ha vc become compulsory But avill notes that fighting penalties have decreased as he says whats the use of hitting someone if youre only going to hurt your knuckles Cavill sees lot of merit in face masks mostly for their protective value And while he concedes that some players might use the mask for purposes other than protec tion he feels that the referees and coaches are there to stop this kind of player The coaches have to instruct the boys on the correct rules and the referees are there to uphold the interpretation of these rules said Cavill know that Barrie is particularly hard on players who use their sticks for high sticking and so on dont think that having the faceinask on makes most players use their sticks more Terry Myers defenceman with the Barrie Colts says that he is glad to not have to wear the face mask this season as he had to wear it last year when he played with Barrie Co op midgets Myers takes somewhat different outlook than Cavill 0n the subject of face masks prefer not to wear face guard said Myers think that face masks make players get more heady about hitting somebody they think they cant get hurt because theyre wearing all this protection honestly feel safer wtthout the mask said Myers dont know why just dont like going out on the ice feel ing so heavily armed know used to have trouble with the mask because Id sometimes lose the puck at my feet While Myers feels that players shouldnt be playing com petitch hockey if they are not willing to take certain amount of risk teammate Kevin Johnson who also played with the oop midgets last season sees face masks in dif ferent light didnt really think of it while was wearing it said Johnson in reference to this years wearing face guard iii minor hockey But think its good in minor hockey for the players to have that kind of protection Even now dont know whether Im going to be hockey player or not When youre young you play for fun and its not worth getting an leye injury or something thats going to affect you for your While it obvious that there are many varying opinions on the face mask everyone argues that it does give protection and that the number of face injuries in minor hockey has decreased since its inception But are the face masks cause or solution of the problem Ive watched lot of midget hockey says Jim Short manager of the Barrie Colts think lot of high sticking goes on because of the face masks players figure that nobody is going to get hurt The face masks guard against injuries but it cart work the other way too Short says it is the general consensus of coaches in Barrie minor hockey that lot of high sticking goes on especially in the juvenile and midget divisions Short says that its up to the referees to call more high sticking penalties so the players will ctit it out While believe that the high sticking elbowing etc still exists this doesnt mean that the face masks are to blame The players need protection but they also need to learn respect for the body and to play under the rules
