As in the case of the two previous victims Miss Hoskings neck had been vicoust mangled Yellow mud Because of the threat of invasion an air raid trench had been dug in the park Distinctive yellow mud had been ex cavated from the trench Miss Hoskings body lay face down in this mud She hadnt been sexually attacked but her clothing was torn into tiny strips Within 15 days three women had been murdered in strik ingly similar circumstances It was obvious that they were not well acquinated with their attacker He killed on the streets with little regard for his own safety Royal Park was located near Camp Pell at the time an American Army installation Incestigating officers at this point who had come up with little to lead them to the killer decided it was possible that the murderer could be an American soldier Sure enough they found guard who remembered soldier returning to the camp late the night of Miss Hoskings death The guard remembered the soldier because he was covered with yellow mud Homicide officers Mooney and Adam visited Camp Pell They slowly walked down rows of canvas tents When they came to tent number 29 they stopped There on the ground at the entrance to the tent was evidence of yellow mud Inside the tent the officers found more of the telltale mud adhering to metal bed The officers left the camp tak ing mud samples with them Later their suspicions were verified when laboratory analysis proved that the mud taken from in front of the tent and the bed matched perfectly with mud samples from the trench in Royal Park The two detectives returned to Camp Pell to interrogate the occupants of tent 29 Before doing so they required clearance from the company commander He surprised the officers by telling them that he had already received com plaint about one of the men in tent 29 Private First Class Edward Joseph Leonski was con tinually returning to camp intoxicated He caused distur bance in the tent babbling incoherently sleeping fitfully and waking up in the middle of the night screaming Once he had inquired of his buddies whether they had ever heard of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde The detectives were incredulous that Leonskis tentmates hadnt complained sooner The soldiers explained that Leon ski was such likeable big guy when sober it was difficult to suspect him of hurting fly When Mooney and Adam finally came face to face with their quarry they knew what the soldiers had meant Private First Class Eddie Leonski was well built tall blond 24yearold with cherubic baby face He was plea sant good natured guy well liked by everyone He did however have the reputation of turning into real trouble maker when under the influence of alcohol The guard who had stopped the soldier covered with yellow mud on the night of Miss Hoskings murder picked Eddie out of lineup of 12 uniformed men Private pleasure turns public STILLWATER 0111 NEAl terested she laughs And New York Eddie had taken up weight lifting while still teenager He had reputation for having extremely strong hands The more police delved into Eddies history the more he resembled an enlistment poster Eddie exemplified the allAmerican boy Eddies father had died while he was still youngster but his mother had managed to make ends meet and brought Eddie up to be fine upstanding citizen Or so she thought In reality Eddie was overly devoted to his mother His ac complishments were for her only His setbacks affected him because he had let his mother down When Eddie was called into the army he cried at the thought of being separated from his mother Once in Australia Eddie began to drink heavily While under the influence he would become belligerent and ac cording to his army buddies he would undergo strange transformation His voice would change dramatically becoming soft and high pitched very much resembling female voice Eddie began by picking up girls in Australia He didnt do anything to them Hejust liked to drink with them and listen to them talk He drank at every opportunity was often ab sent without leave and in general was poor soldier Eddie himself knew something terrible was happening to him Once he pleaded with guard Please put me in the guardhouse and keep me there Im too dangerous to run around loose Justa chat Slowly Eddie gravitated from just talking to girls to trying to strangle them He would release his grip before they lost consciousness Eddie later explained that he really didnt want to kill the girls Their voices reminded him of his mother He only wanted to remove their voices These girls had reported his attacks to the police but in each case the attack had taken place in the dark and they could not pro vide good descriptions Eddie couldnt explain why he became murderer He didnt know any of his victims After killing Mrs McLeod he knew he had to kill in order to possess the voices of his victims Eddie couldnt explain his compulsion to rip his vic tims clothing He did say that when he read about his crimes in the newspapers he would cry Yet knowing what would happen when he drank he never hesitated to go on bender Eddie told the authorities of meeting Miss Hosking on the street He asked her for directions back to camp She was obliging and walked with him As the hapless woman talked Eddie knew he had to possess her voice Without warning he clutched her throat and as his victim went limp he dragged her into Royal Park It was here that he stumbled and fell on the mounds of yellow mud Eddie was examined by psychiatrists They all agreed that he was full of unnatural feelings for his mother and was undoubtedly fetishist However in the strict legal sense he was found to be sane Eddie was tried by US Military Court found guilty and sentenced to death Just piror to his execution Eddie sang song in his cell He sang in soft clear female voice Edward Joseph Leonski was hanged for his crimes on Nov 1942 We Repair Watches The young couple was living LITTLEST HOBO II NASHVILLE
