his beloveds grand mother who beat him up There are thousands millions even and humoristwriter Ben Wicks has brought selection of losers together in his new Book of Losers illustrated with his squiggly almost amateurish cartoons Wicks himself is loser he says without conviction Truc hcs undersizc and he didnt have much chance at an education But hes big shot in his field and has booming laugh that startled halfawake hotel diners during recent breakfast interview Ive never ever won any thing says Wicks who may be consoled by the fact that ad vance sales already have put his new book in the bestsell erclass He has parlayed boundless enthusiasm talent and bit of luck into flourishing career as TV personality author and one of the worlds highestpaid and most widely distributed car toonists His daily cartoon and cartoon strip appear in almost 200 news papers in North America and he recently launched new CBC TV series of offbeat chat shows interviewing the famous and the obscure throughout the world NEED LOSERS His books theme is that the world only hears about win ners Without losers there would be no winners he says mer rily Behind the facade of vic tory lies the bodies of unher alded losers Despite his claims as loser this chipper little Cockney who was born block from London Bridge and emigrated to Can ada in 1957 has knack for turning adversity to advantage areer BEN give it up he says but the May 22 election of Joe Clarks Progressive Con ervativc government gave me whole new cast of characters to play with He put together his new book in about three weeks He already had good collec tion of loser stories culled from newspapers journalist friends and history but he hit pay dirt when he ran into friend Sean Kelly of National Lam poon That magazine had spon sored loser contest and Kelly had roomful of stories left over for me to choose from If Wicks 53 has serious bone in his body it is touched by the subject of national unity He gets quite deweyeyed dis cussing his lovc affair with his adopted country and feels mission to enlighten native Ca nadians who are far too com placent about the country He addresses the subject at every opportunity and blames the media for failure to stir pa triotism and failure to give the right kind of information to help Canadians apprecrate what they really have IBen Wicks Book of Losers McClelland and Stewart Ltd 8995
