Future looks bright at Sunny Park Centre By MARY DELANEY Of The Examiner With opening of the Sunny Park Childrens Centre under the Barrie and District Association for the Mentally Retarded the future for families of children with developmental han dicaps looks slightly brighter The centre located on the edge of park at Cook and Steele Streets is perfect location for the growing program for children Wth multiple disabilities Virginia Hartley Childhood SerVices Director for the Barrie Association for the Mentally Retarded says she sees it as very exciting program The new centre formerly modemstyle church features large open area in the upstairs ideal for the nursery which operates there in two daily programs There kitchen for the staff or for the children to get into some good messy play like finger painting Downstairs there are smaller rooms for offices and large hallway that will be ideal for the toy library they to set up in the not too distant future Both floors are accessib from out side by people in wheelchairs although they cannot go from one floor to the next TIIFZ NlItSFZRY The association only took possession of the building on Oc tober wrth great deal of financial assistance from the Bar rie ivitans Ilandymen and painters are as much in evidence right now as the children or the teaching staff The morning session finds the nursery with teaching staff and volunteers and children ranging in age from two to five These are children whose disabilities are less severe Hopefully they GUI DRAPERIES mm tiiiirro For shop at home call Donlop St 728199 whom one of the special classes for the trainable mentally retarded In the afternoon the age of the children extends to 10 years These are severely handicapped children with multiple disabilities They are residents of the Ark Eden Nursing Home for severely retarded children it is doubtful that they will ever go to school These children need special programs that as yet are not available in public schools Thats where the biggest challenge lies for the Sunny Park Centre TEACHING believe that any child can be taught says Hartley With seveme delayed children this obviously does not mean the traditional concept of threeR education For many of the children in the afternoon class this education Is as baSIC as learning gross motor skills such as sitting up or eating The teacherstudent ratio here is very low four children to each teacher plus any volunteers who offer their time And volunteers are always needed The situation is never hopeless but it is very slow painstaking and at times frustrating pro cess Other programs give much quicker rewards to the instruc tors suc as the inhome infant stimulation program Here the worker from the Association for the Mentally Retarded visits the parents and child in their home Hartley is especially proud of the program the only one of its kind in the county Essentially were teaching mom to teach baby she says When the child is very young it is difficult to tell if the problem is actually problem in the brain or rather physical social or emotional handicap Factors such as dyslexia perceptual difficulty with the eye or even child abuse can cause symptons that may be diagnosed as mental retardation In this program the worker helps the parents to cope with their childs disability and learn in whatever manner the baby can The reward is in catching the problem early enough that it can be arrested slowed down or perhaps even prevented Other program are in the works for the association such as toy library in the basement of the centre Others are still at the drawing board stage One thing is certain though the future is cirtainly brighter than it once was for the children at Sunny ar one Each child has an individual program and receives close personal attention Above teacher Brenda Alcombrock helps child with her finger painting Examiner Photo people places available by calling Joyce Beeton Trinity United Church 7262597 or shift from top to bottom but you are right its definite trend Maybe it means the world is coming to an end Bum joke Dear Ann Lenders You missed the boat in responding to Nibbler in Bridgepor She was surprised to learn that shoppers who help themselves to cookies potato chips fruit etc and discard the remains before they get to the check out counter hurt the stores profits substantiall You said the stores profits are hit lot ha er because of shoplifting than nibbling Of course they are But dont you realize Ann those nibblers ARE shoplifting If they tried to walk out of the store with the stuff in their tote bags instead of their stomachs theyd be arrested How come you didnt say so BMM ln Dearborn Mich Dear BMM Because wasnt as sharp as you Thanks for waking me up And now that Im up Id are so crabby lately and Ive been trying to put my finger on it ls it unemployment SALT ll Nuclear contrOVersy Fuel shortages Inflation That may be part of it but think Im on to something that really makes sense Listen to this There are 217 million people in this country There are 138 million people who own total of 143 million cars There are 28 THOUSAND legal parking places Do you have any idea what that can do to nation see it every day Sweet little old ladies driving around in circles in shopping centres spending their final days on earth writing obscene messages in the dust on the trunks of small cars Civilized men turned informers about car in towaway zone When it is removed they pull into the spot had my license only few months when my small son broke his leg on swing set scooped him up him in the car and came to screeching halt in front of emergency door of the hospital Hey lady yelled policeman You cant park there Ive got 53 pound boy with broken leg shouted Visitor parking is in Section just beyond Handicap ped The problem continues to get worse No wonder graduates of universities are older now They spend an extra three years trying to find place to park Consider the frustration of student in an Eastern school who was parked illegally and left the following note on his windshield Have mercy Attention police officer know my car is parked illegally Could you please give me break My starter is dead and wont start on cold day have done nothing this semester but worry about this car park it pay tickets and pick it up after being towed Im doing the best can It will be moved tomorrow somehow have no more funds for tickets or towing My friends are tired of pushing this thing around Please dont tow it If you do at least tow it to Gordies University Texaco Station will commit suicide if you do otherwise cannot handle the situation rest my case YLINE TS Tumblers Rocks Steins Come In Early for Best Selection Many Items Are In Limited Supply 128 Brock St Block
