000 brave elements to see ceremony Freedom rains for Borden troops By RICHARD THOMAS Of The Examiner About 1000 Barrie residents turn ed out Wednesday afternoon to watch as the freedom of their city was granted to troops from Cana dian Forces Base Borden Crowds of menwomen and children gathered in front of city hall to witness the historic and now rare ceremony and later lined Dunlop Street East despite pouring rain as more than 1200 troops from the base paraded through downtown Barrie Barrie Mayor Ross Archer who bestowed the honor on the base said the purpose of the occasion as to mark more than 60 year of friendly relations between the city and the base Barrie is grateful for the benefits and friendship which have emanted from the base Mayor Archer said ACCEPTS HONOR Commodore Hotsenpiller commander of CFB Borden who ac cepted the freedom of the city on behalf of the troops described the ceremony as unique and visible expression of the friendship Commodore Hotsenpiller later told The Examiner it is unusual for freedom of city to be granted to base as it is normally awarded to single regiment Only four or five cities in Canada have performed the ceremony he said and it is great honor The custom dates back to the 17th century when King Charles II of England issued warrants to beat enactment of the tradition up or recruit men for service in the navy during the Dutch Wars Recruiting regiments had to show the warrants to the Lord Mayor of London before being granted freedom of the city and permission to march through the streets with drums beating colors flying and bayonets fixed During Wednesdays re the troops under command of Colonel Robert Ford assembled in front of city hall after making their ap proach along Collier Street from both the est and the west KNOCKS THREE TIMES After being greeted by Barrie Police Chief Earl Snider Col Ford approached the closed door of city hall and ceremoniously knocked three times on it with the shaft of his sword announcing the arrival of the troops to Mayor Archer and Com modore Hotsenpiller who were in side The mayor and the commodore then made their arrival and in spected the troops The parade then moved along Col lier and Owen Streets to Dunlop Street East where the troops took the salute from Commodore Hotsen piller and Mayor Archer who stood in front of the cenotaph in the pour ing rain Several other dignitaries were also in the official party including MP Doug Lewis PCSimcoe North MPP George Taylor PCSimcoeCentre and William Gibbins Reeve of Simcoe County Unqualified success but planes grounded One of the key organizers of Wednesdays freedom of the city ceremony has described it as an un qualified success It was most impressive ceremony said Peter McIn tyre chairman of promotion for the downtown board was very pleased to see the turnout for it McIntyre along with Mayor Ross Archer and Alderman Gord Mills was responsible for much of the organization of the historic well he said It was very difficult possible But the degree of precision and perfection involved in the teams performance re quires weather conditions to be at an optimum he said The planes fly less than five metres apart and often wing tip to wing tip Mcln tyre said The Snowbirds however have assured me they will do everything possible to get confirmed performance date in Barrie next year he stu dent employment cause he said Jeff Walther of CKBB radio will receive an award because the radio personality has devoted his own time to sup porting the cause he said Likewise has Paul White of said Baker It all depends on the proposed recreational plan in the works Proctor and Redfern Ltd of Knowles wants answers on master plan Some serious questions re main about proposed recrea tional master plan for Barrie says Ald Bill Knowles Proctor and Redfern Ltd of Barrie has been recommended by the recreational planning committee to undertake the study It made the decision at an incamera meeting follow ing special general commit tee meeting Monday The master plan study would be conducted to determine recreational priorities and needs in Barrie The company which the com mittee has parents group seeking to prevent fur ther field testing of the human relations program in Simcoe County schools said he expects to file for an injunction by the end of next week Marshall Green told The Ex aminer today he is assembling documents and preparing material which should be ready by the end of next week He will file the material in Barrie where the injunction trial if granted would be held An interim injunction could also be given to prevent further fieldtesting until the perma nent injunction proceedings are held Application for the interim measure would be made in Toronto Green fined $100 in provincial court Wednesday William John Duncan 18 ap proached Harry Murdoch who was out walking at about 1015 pm March 19 and demanded money Murdoch who was very upset went to his neighbors home and was followed by Dun can who eventually went home without getting any money Defence lawyer Lawrence Miller said Duncan was undergoing psychiatric care at the time of the incident He said the accused had suffered head injuries and went into coma after severe motorcycle acci dent last August He suffered further head injuries the day before the incident during fracas in Bracebridge court was told After the attempted robbery Duncan went home and asked his mother to shoot him Miller said He then went outside in freezing weather without Coat saw police cruiser sneaked up behind it and start ed what Millcr termed bizarre conversation with of ficerwith singing and com ments regarding the moon Ducans unusual behavior prompted police to take him in to custody and he was later ar in the park ing lot outside his apartment Crown attorney Thomp son said Burke entered the parking lot at about pm saw some youths playing hockey and started yelling at them When Cardinal said hello to Burke he butted the cigarette in the boys face causing slight cheek burn He then grabbed the youths hockey stick and struck him twice with it The defence indicated Burke was an alcoholic and suffering from acute mania at the time of the incident and did not remember details of the assault Following the assault Burke spent five days at Royal Vic toria Hospital undergoing psychiatric treatment In pro
