nu Lambsum 1Wn riscos forced comedy By STEPHEN GAUER Of The Examiner In The Frisco Kid at the 1m perial Gene Wilder plays Polish rabbi left to his own devices in Americas wild wild west circa 1898 Wilders on his way to San Francisco to wed bride hes never met but first he has to survive the culture shock of frontier amorality and religious ignorance Hes stranger in strange land who gets into trouble faster than you can spell Torah The incongruity of placing Jewish rabbi in western land scape makes for easy jokes and the kind of slapstick comedy thats so obvious you can see the pratfalls coming mile away But Wilder looking like hes just stepped off the set of Fiddler On the Roof is so honest and devout such likeable hero that the films dead slow pace is almost tolerable HAM FISTEI What isnt so tolerable is the hamfisted humor in his film Wilder starving after hes been robbed of all his money chases chicken through the sagebrush shouting dont want to kill you just want to make you kosher lentertainent Editor Stephen Gauer7266537 GENE WILDER plays Polish rabbi Players still seeking entries for cabaret talent competition Musically talented young women 19 years of age or older architect David Haynes says he expects project approval for the first experimental drivein cinema by the end of the year Nottingham site has been chosen by Apollo Drivein Cine mas but the residents of easy pun chlines He meets up with bank robber named Tommy Harrison Ford gets ca tured by Indians and en up teaching the braves how to do folk dance to the beat of tom tom drums The chief whos easily impressed lets the duo go free the audience much more demanding may ask for their money back But through all this nonsense through the jokes on Jewish customs and beliefs Wilder somehow keeps his sense of dignity intact The subplot in volve running feud with the gang who robbed him at the beginning of the film and even tually climaxes with Wilders stubborn advocacy of non violence Wilder may often look ridiculous in this film but he still emerges as the hero the one good man who sticks by his beliefs even when hes facing the barrel of gun MOMENTS Ford has his moments too He can understand what motivates someone like Wilder but by the end of the film he realizes hes won the friendship of an unusual man Theres serious theme in this film that rubs uneasily against the com edy and the slapstick In the truest tradition of American idealism Wilder stands by his principles and earns his happy ending and his new bride the hard way He may be an inno cent in land of savages but the new world cant beat him down Only the script can do that Somewhere in The Frisco Kid lurks film that might have been one of the brightest lights of an otherwise dismal summer season of films As it is the film glows only in fits and starts Thanks to Wilder its better film than it deserves to be Collegiate band scores first Barries Central Collegiate Band directed by Morley Calvert scored first two
