Native council president says PCs recognize Indian rights OTTAWA CP The presi dent of the Native Council of Canada says he expects the new federal government will be receptive to dealing with the major concerns of Metis and nonstatus Indians Things are moving along quite well for new govern ment and they seem to be quite interested in resolving these issues Harry Daniels said in an interview Saturday Speaking at the end of the councils annual assembly Daniels said the previous Liberal government tried to evade the issues In contrast the Progressive Conservatives recognize aboriginal rights and are likely to place great deal of cm phasis on economic develop ment he said The council has been trying to get Ottawa to settle land claims in number of areas of Canada grant special status under revised Canadian con stitution and exempt Indians from game hunting restrictions set out in the Migratory Birds Convention Act Church leaders divided by Lords Prayer issue TORONTO iCPt Religious leaders in Metropolitan Toronto are divided on whether the Lords Prayer should be discon tinued in the citys public schools Spokesmen for Canadas two largest churches the United and Presbyterian churches say the prayer should no longer be recited in the schools which have many children of non Christian faith However spokesmen for the Roman Catholic and Anglican churches and the Moslem faith say it would be unfortunate to remove the prayer from the school system They were reacting to deci sion last week by the Toronto board of education which voted to ask the Ontario education ministry to replace the prayer with minute of silent medita tion Education Minister Belle Stephenson said in an interview Saturday that she would not comment until she has seen details of the request However she said legislation now allows boards and prin cipals to have prayers other than the Lords Prayer recited In their classrooms She said many schools with large Jewish populations recite other prayers Rev Garnsworlhy These speedy colts and their famous drivers will place the track record in jeopardy It promises to be great night dont miss it great drivers and the biggest purse ever combination Top horses winning WEDNESDAY POST TIME Anglican bishop of Toronto said dicontinuing the prayer could lead to more fragmenta tion in the education system than there is now Rev John Boissoncau spiritual chancellor for the Toronto Roman Catholic Ar chdiocese said he could understand the reason for the move but finds it unfortunate Ayube Ally Canadian viccpresidenl 0f the Federation of Islamic Associations in North America said as religious group we are opposed to dropping any religion in the schools MEILUN ort Daniels himself has been strongly identified with all three issues Council delegates backed his stands and reelected him to third term as their president N0 POLICY CHANGES No major changes in policy were evident during the three day assembly and delegates ap peared to be content with the councils general strategy of cooperating with the federal government for redress of longstanding grievances They also appeared willing to accept the notion that changes would not come about over night Dont get me wrong Were angry Daniels explained But we dont harbor resent ment against any person Although the overall mood of the assembly was one of pa tience there were several calls for more action and less talk in the councils dealings with Ot tawa Former council president Tony Belcourt told the group that some of the problems fac ing Metis and nonstatus In dians could be alleviated im mediately if the federal govern ment took broader view of the termlndian In statement repeated several times during the meeting Belcourt noted that the definition ofanlndianinthe British North America Act is broader than in the Indian Act OENTURE THERAPIST Complete Denture Service Hours9am 6pm Mon thru Fri 280 Dunlap St Barrie 7286810 Member
