husbands Another reader asked you to describe mamas boy and you did Now will you please be fair and describe daddys girl They make equally rotten wives Thanks bunch Married One Dear One Since you married one you could probably give better description than but heres mine daddys girl is female who is hung up on her father She puts his wishes before those of her fiance or husband She also is in constant touch with Dad asking his opinion on all matters Daddys girl might not realize it but she is constantly sending out the message that Daddy is the No man in her life Dear Ann Landers have seen many letters in your col umn from people who speak out in behalf of their chosen field Will you please devote some space to the nursing pro fession There are many misconceptions about nurses and their work would like to clarify few We are not around to seduce doctors gossip run er rands or answer telephones contrary to soap opera impres srons Nurses are not put on the night shift because they are weird or not competent enough to work regular shifts Usually it is matter of seniority Male nurses are not necessarily gay or stupid We are not extremely well paid Weekends are con sidered regular work days and holidays and graveyard shifts pay only time and half Some jobs pay double or tri ple time It is not because we are lazy that we encourage patients to do as much for themselves as possible The more they can do the faster their strength will return and the sooner they can go home We dont get our jollies by doing invasive and embar rassing procedures They are necessary to properly care for patients We are not to blame when complications occur after surgery good example is incisional infections The next time you or someone you know is in the hospital notice how carefully the nurses change dressing The doctors on the other hand often mess around without mask or gloves This can and does cause problems We are not maids We will gladly clean up after patients who are really sick but we resent being asked to do chores for slovenly and lazy people We are not just doctors helpers We go to college from two to four years to learn our skills Nothing is more annoy ing than to answer question and then hear the patient say Thats nice but Ill ask the doctor so Ill know for sure realize that there are incompetent people in every pro fession Also the anxiety and tension produced by illness produces irritability yet great many people have lot to learn about nursing Please help us Glad Chase 1t Dear Glad And Im glad you wrote Youve dealt with several issues the public needs to be made aware of Thanks for writing WI US famous for products By ERMA BOMBECK In last months Saturday Review John Mariani wrote an intriguing article on American products The consensus was startling It seems we are noted throughout the world for only three products that we make better than anyone else washing machines toilet paper and jeans That is the most depressing thing have ever read It means jeans are as good as theyre ever going to get Ever since they appeared on the fashion scene nearly decade ago have had wish Just once Id like to wear pair of jeans with the shirt tucked INSIDE have never seen proportions so inconsistent When the leg fits the seat blouses When the seat fits the waistband gaps When the waistband fits the zipper wont meet When 31 of the above fits you have to have an 18inch hem in em Jeans are possibly the only secret weapon that the Russians refused to invent after it was produced In fact they cant even copy them and think know why Russians are too practical can just see garment industry in Odessa where the tables are laid with blue denim and the tailors are poised over it with chalk while on the wall for easy reference is the form of female She is built like parking meter He chalks and he cuts He pieces and he pins Finally in exasperation he throws down his chalk and re moves his glasses It cant be done he says Who can wear pants that have only three inches between the crotch and the waistband Who would buy something that stands up long after youve sat down Who can wear legs so small they should have message strapped to them tell you the Americans have beat us Its impossible few years ago my husbani and visited Russia and their infatutuation with jeans is not just propaganda Its true We heard stories of how Russians approached Americans and offered them valuable icons medals and even rubles for their jeans even heard where one visitor was thrown to the ground and the jeans pulled right off her body wasnt shocked It seemed like humane way to get out ofjeans to me Pollys Pointers Marshmallows revived DEAR POLLY wonder if anyone knows what to do with marshmallows that have gotten hard Also what can one do with unused stale coffee MARIE DEAR MARIE always put such marshmallows in wire strainer and hold over pan of boiling water am sure the readers will be sending us some ideas for using stale coffee POLLY DEAR POLLY The easiest and quickest way have found to control ants on the counter or sink is to blot them with piece of masking tape With little pressure the ants stick to the tape Ants and tape can be disposed together ALICE DEAR POLLY Mothers with little ones can help keep their fingers out of electric fans by making nylon net covers to fit over the fans Air gets through but not fingers NANCY DEAR POLLY In these days of rising food costs cutting down on food waste is essential would like to share some of my ideas for using leftovers keep large covered bowl in my refrigerator and several times week when we have mashed potatoes those left over are put in the bowl At the end of the week add eggs grated onion and salt and pepper to the potatoes whip them up in mixer and then make into small patties to fry Also bit of baking powder can be added and spoonfuls dropped into the deep ryer Corn is saved the same way and used for Sunday morning treat add milk gs flour baking wder and bit of salt and drop spoon ul at time into at fat The leftover corn becomes corn fritters Leftover hot dogs are mixed with cooked macaroni along with eggs and then tried in skillet with bit of margarine or cooking oil Stretching ones food dollar can become fun game RITA
