ortant strike was made at Rabbit Creek on August 12 ut the claim was filed on August 17 by George Washington Carmack It was the custom in those days not to hide discovery of gold so Carmack told everyone he met about it The Rabbit Creek area renamed Bonanza was completely staked by the end of the month and more important discoveries were made along Eldorado Creek Prospectors rushed to the Yukon from many parts of the world When the gold rush petered out in 1899 Dawson City had population of 30000 Although George Washington Carmack filed the first claim the man most responsible was Robert Henderson who got very little from it Racial prejudice cost him fortune Henderson was the son of lighthouse keeper in Cape Breton Even as small boy he dreamed of being prospector and began looking for gold in many parts of the world when he grew up Eventually he got to the Yukon and found deposit of gold that earned him $750 He went to Ogilvie settlement for supplies and met George Washington Carmack along the way fishing with two Indians Tagish Charlie and Skookum Jim Henderson told Carmack about his discovery but asked him not to take his Indian friends there becausc ch derson did not like Indians However Carmack arrived on the scene with Tagish Charlie and Skookum Jim and got an unfriendly reception from Henderson They left Henderson and began prospecting for them selves along Rabbit Creek where they made their strike Carmack then went to Constantines Post to record the claim but did not tell Henderson Eventually the federal government gavc chdcrson pension of $200 Dear Dr Donahue Please tell me what causes pleurisy and what can be done for it HH Pleurisy is greatly misunderstood medical term Many readers mistakenly believe it to mean pain in the chest any pain in the chest The pain from pleurisy has very definite origin an in flammation ot the pleura PLOOruh which is the thin sheet of tissue covering the lungs This membrane rides smoothly on lung surfaces during breathing as the lungs expand and contract unless something interferes Disturbance of the pleura may arise from virus or bacte rial infection from clots or from tumors The end result is the friction from the irritation which sends the stabbing pains through the chest People whove had pleurisy can tell you of the agony of the deep breath cannot tell from the rest of your letter whether you in deed do have pleurisy or are using the term loosely In any event if you have pains when you breath it migh pleurisy That is treated by eliminating the infection if present or by treating other lung problems Dear Dr Donahue My daughter is 34 and has had the problem of trichomonas va ginal Shes been treated with Flagyl but it evidently doesnt help her She is constantly itch be from ing and has an odorws dis charge which makes her miserable Her husband has been checked and he is OK She cannot understand why she seems OK for few days after taking the medicine only to have the problem come back know that Flagyl is effective in most cases but there must be lot of other women who get poor results Is there something else she might be taking Mrs EL Flagyl metronidazole is effective against the trichomonas organism in 95 per cent of cases In some resistant cases treatment may be necessary for several months However sensitivity can develop and it may even en courage the growth of the candida fungus If She has candida infection the Flagyl would make it worse Other medicine may be needed after two or three months of use She should have smear ex amination to determine exactly which organisms are present Even if the husband is clear of infection he should use con dom until both he and his wife are clear simultaneously The husband is given Flagyl even if the organism is not found
