weeks Those exotic characters and fanciful places are part of the Peking Opera Theatres princi pal touring production The Monkey King Creates Havoc in Heaven The tour organized by the Canada Councils touring office under the ChinaCanada cul tural exchange agreement opens in Toronto Oct and runs through Montreal Ottawa Hamilton Regina Edmonton Vancouver and Victoria where it closes with one performance Nov 13 Arranging the tour has been going on for months and is the second big Chinese attraction to come to Canada under the agreement The first was the Shanghai Ballet which as tounded cultural ac tivity at home and abroad says report made public Wednes sixmember committee led by Roger Jones of Toronto Dance Theatre says the grant giving council should take the initiative to gain more power Areas the council should enter as an adviser include winter works and other job creation measures now sponsored by the manpower department and the promotion of trade and commerce The report was repared last fall and submitted to the coun cil in December The external affairs depart ment which subsidiaes inter national tours of foreign and Canadian artists under cultural exchange agreements should turn that part of its work over to the council along with the money the external affairs de partment now spends How much money is involved is not clear The external af fairs departments $385 mil lion budget includes $326 mil lion for information activities and cultural relations but that apparently includes more than the Jones report suggests be transferred to the council
