of it at some time but what are the logical consequences of this kind of argument Using the muscles would wear them out Washing your skin would eventually wear it all away Using any part of your body would produce catastrophic consequences The best advice then would be to stay in the crib from the day of birth Dont venture anywhere or you risk causing some fragile part to wear away This line of reasoning stems from the comparison some books draw between the hotly and machine While the Athletic activity keeps even older joints in shape as senior hurler shows if Running risks no different Robert Boos of Angus Examiner Photo analogy is convenient and accurate in many respects it creates problem because some people take this to mean the body acts like machine in every respect machine consists of material which cannot change ex cept to deteriorate by eventually wearing out The body like any organic substance is remarkable because of its response to stimulus Organic materials respond by adap tating when they are used and muscle responds to use by enlarging its mass and becoming stronger But the muscles are not the only parts of the body that respond to use Every part of the body does karate expert using the edge of his hands frequently soon develops calcium phosphate deposit along the bone on the edge of the hand This together with toughening of the skin makes it possible to use extra force with less risk of damage to the hand football lineman using his forearms to block opponents also develops the same protection Adaptation also occurs in the knee joints of runners but there is significant difference in the length of time adapta tion process takes in the knees The bone ends involved in the action of the knee on the femur and the tibia are covered by cartilageinous material This material is white smooth and tough but has very little blood supply Blood carries building materials and nutrients to the cells of the body so any adaptation pro cess which takes place in cartilidge takes long time When person begins running program gradual thickening of this cartilige layer takes place It does not start to wear away Because this is long process it is im portant that any running program be gradual so that the amount of running does not outstrip the adaptation process factor leading to the high dropout rate among beginners is overexuberance Trying to improve too quickly causes the knee problems to develop They can also develop from uneven wear as happened to me last year runner facing traffic when running will cause greater wear on the right side of the knee This apparently is com mon problem and many people are surprised to find the slight camber of the road from the centre to the outside can cause uneven wear in the knees If the runner persists in running on one side of the road at all times If you have been running this summer and you still do not have your entry in for Sundays 20 km run its not too late 27 Just come to the CKYR television tower at 830 am Sunday to register for the race The route is scenic and fairly flat and runs entirely along country roads Join the Wednes day fun runs at 730 formation phone Terry
