encouraged to write to Jocelyn Ann Landers Stopping card poor solution Dear Ann Landers This situation happens all too often and no one seems to have any good ideas on how to deal with it Recently during rushhour traffic car in the next lane hit dog The driver kept going after knocking the beautiful animal into my lane The dog was in pain barking fran tically He was very much alive stopped my car with the intention of helping the poor mutt but chickened out Drivers were passing on both sides was afraid of getting hit or bitten So reluctantly con tinued on my way as did others They probably felt as guilty as Fortunately the animal was able to limp out of danger But what if he hadnt How do you help or at least protect an injured animal until you can get professional assistance Want To Do Better Next Time Dear Want To called Robert Brown director of the AntiCruelty Society in Chicago He said If you see wounded animal on city street call the SPCA or local Humane Society If you spot wounded animal on high way call the highway patrol Humane Society trucks are not allowed to stop on the highways to pick up injured animals Its too dangerous Im glad you wrote Mr Browns answer should serve as warning to all kindhearted folks who feel compelled to stop on busy highway to help an injured animal Dont do it it could cost you your life Dear Ann Landers My sons wife is lovely person So what is my complaint Well the only time see her is when she brings the children for me to babysit or when invite them for meal She runs in drops off the kids and runs out When she picks them up same thing never an extra minute for visiting My daughterinlaw spends time with her own mother which is natural understand it and am not jealous person But have no daughters only sons and it would give me so much pleasure if she treated me as friend am not meddlesome and have never been critical of her in any way am also quite busy But even busy person can be lonely for little attention from her children How do cope Leoti Kansas Dear Leoti Have you ever told your daughterinlaw how you feel If not you should If she is as lovely as you say and if youve described yourself accurately the problem must be one of communication frank and open discussion could solve it Dear Ann Landers In recent column you said many people who send for your booklets address the self addressed envelope to YOU instead of to themselves You expressed surprise Why Dont you know the average person is an idiot have worked in government agency for 15 years Recently woman who filled out form wrote after the word sex dont care for it anymore You should know better than most people how dumb the public is Clued 1n Dear dont find the public dumb although there are notable exceptions But since you work in government agency will you please pass the word to your superiors that most simple forms are so complicated that Albert Einstein would have trouble with them Consumers Meade Choosing house siding By JOY WOOLAND We are going to have aluminum siding put on the outside of our house We asked couple of contractors to come and give us estimates and although each said that the same brand aluminum would be used the difference in the two estimates was over $300 The choice of contractor is even more difficult now are there any guidelines In your case would telephone each of the contractors and ask for an explanation of such large difference However all estimates should be put in writing and apart from stating the type of aluminum its thickness should be given together with all details regarding installation and cost of labour Most siding manufacturers publish pamphlets describing their products so if you wrote to them you would get better idea of what to expect Although it is advertising material it is quite easy to read between the lines Most siding provides little insulation value and even if it is backed with material allegedly for insulation purposes it would not be as effective as having the walls of our house in sulated Aluminum siding is an attractive purchase for those who want to avoid those onerous tasks of painting and maintain ing the exterior of their houses but consumers must ensure that the siding they select will stand up fairly well to chalk ing pollution and fading Also air vents must exist to allow proper circulation of air witin the house It is usually recommended that consumers deal with local businesses which have earned good reputations in the com munity but you should still ask contractors for names and addresses of people for whom they have recently installed siding and check with these people to find out if they were satisfied Reading the warranty and the contract carefully takes time but is worth it in order to avoid misunderstandings in the future Most metal sidings carry 20year guarantee but this is usually against faulty manufacture Check the guarantee on the finish particularly The contract must in clude names and addresses of vendor and purchaser detailed description of the goods and services an itemized price list for these and the guarantee This complies with the Consumer Protection Act Payment should be made by cheque and the consumer is advised to hold back 15 per cent of the total for 37 days after completion for protection under The Mechanics Lien Act Pollys Pointers How to clean lampshades DEAR POLLY would like to know how to clean white silk lampshades that have gold trim sewed on The shades have turned yellow and it costs entirely too much to replace them DORIS DEAR DORIS Perhaps you could have your shades dry cleaned do ask about it However do not think even the dry cleaning will take the yellow out just the dust and grime Your silk shades may not take well to washing and am sure the gold trim would not If you wish to try washing them and some can be done very satisfactorily remove the trimming and be sure the rest of the shade is sewn and not glued Fill the bathtub higher than the depth of the shade with water and detergent for delicate fabrics Dunk the shade up and down in the suds being sure it is completely immersed each time Rub any stubborn spots with soft brush Repeat suds treatment if need be and then rinse three or four times in clear water always being sure the entire shade is covered Blot the excess water with towel Tie string to the top center of the shade frame and suspend it from clothesline in the shade out of doors and preferably on slightly breay day so it will dry as nickly as possible if this is not possible hung over bathroom shower rod to drip dry Some fabrics may look stretched while wet but will tighten up II they dry it the heat from light bulbs has damaged the silk in the shade do not be surprised if it disintegrltos As lsstresortrecoveringoshndeisnottoohnrdm and pin it on the frame with the inside out Stitch trim seams closely and turn Press seams lint Put on properly and hand stitch to frame top and bottom irirn as desired Use your old shades as guide POLLY
