23 the exanliper Wednesday Augufl 197 British audience loves Nofionol LONDON CPI The au dience loved it but the critics were less receptive to the royal gala opening Monday of the Na tional Ballet of Canadas week long program The company danced Swan Lake before Princess Margaret the first time Canadian troupe has appeared at Covent Gardens Royal Opera House Clement Crisp in The Finan cial Times praised the floral arrangements saying all praise to the Canadians for showing us how the theatre ought to look and so rarely does for special event He said the company was clearly determined to show its classical credentials this sea son The style of the ensemble is neat wellmannered but the staging is one of those wilful ex ercises which perverts the ac cepted text of Swan Lake in or der to reaSsert Siegfried as the focal point of the ballet Fernau Hall in The Tele graph pays tribute to the com panys bravery in choosing Swan Lake as an opener DEFECTS EVIDENT The decision was unwise for the defects of the production and the dancing stood out all too clearly Hall says One of the most disturbing features of the Canadian production was Erik Bruhns choreography Mary Clarke in The Guard ian writes There is tasteless addition to the end of the great lvanov Act pas de deux when all the swans break out into merry ca perings and destroy the elegiac ending There are some very ugly lifts in which dette is carried virtually upside down her legs exposed to the audience The third act contains clowns always danger and Bruhii has rechoreographed the black swan pas de deux in way which robs it of ex citement It was that part of the pro gram in particular which brought cries of Bravo and prolonged applause from the openingnight audience At the end Of the perform ance the sellout crowd cheered and applauded for eight minutes saving its loudest cheers for Karen Kain as the Swan Queen Frank Augustyn as the Prince and Ann Ditchburn who danced the Black ueen Hall in The Telegraph says Augustyn showed some real sense of style though certain aspects of his technique such as his preparation for turns in the air were faulty As dctteOdile Karen Kain showed an awkward line and poor sense of style throughout She displayed little feeling for characterisation and even her makeup was faulty Her dancing had none of the artistry so characteristic of the dancing of ms Smith the first prima ballerina of the com pany trtsp gt£tlfl he found the dra 31m ot Kain and cool but theysuggest ie that is company tome to the mags Iiirch head Bramopening dx at do much better Im we may hope wnt outtc
