3224 Artists benefit from Arts Festival By STEPHEN lALER The Examiner The Kempenfest show is good exposure for artists Monica Shelton is saying as she sits in lawnchair set up op posite the display of her and her husbands work at the Huronia Arts and Crafts Festival The Sheltons are threeyear veterans of the show This yeartheir exhibit feature watercolors graphite drawings and ink drawings Early Saturday afternoon as the ex hibï¬tors took refuge from the hot sun the crowds were still ig But as Mrs Shelton explains the show is more than an op portunity for artists and craftsmen to sell their workiits also place to get exposure and develop some contacts Its also time to renew friendships made at previous art shows Mrs Shelton finds the outdoor setting of the show par ticularly appealing enjoy this show she says People are less inhibited than they would be in gallery And peo ple can talk to the artist people love to talk about art and techniques The show brings arts and crafts to the people Through that exposure they become aware For young artists the show gives them chance to get going Thats how gallery people find artists show like this is good place to make contacts DREW The artists work covered every type of medium from watercolor pain tings to silkscreen prints and photography The craft displays ranged from the familiar pottery weaving and jewelry to the less familiar burlap dolls and hand painted earthenware Graham Bradley is Toronto artist who makes frabric collages landscape scenes created from tweed and cloth and then framed as artwork Bradley making his second ap pearance at the arts and crafts show said Saturday he was enjoying an exceptionally goodreception from the people touring the show Bradley does lot of outdoor shows in the Stratford and Toronto ara displaying work that he describes as unique in the province Many of his scenes are miniature landscapes as small as the palm of hand Many of the scenes are Irish based on sketches or photographs Bradley has done while visiting his native country Even Donegal tweed carried back on these trips finds its way into his tiny cloth land scapes Watercolor enthusiasts could enjoy field day at the show Work by local artists like Graham Scholes Bea Hogan Dawn Whitehead and Patty Ratsch was on display along with paintings by outoftown artists such as Beverly Spicer and Jake Moi sergeant on many craft articles for sale in the show Margaret Lane of Zephry nt was enjoying the shade of an umbrella Saturday afternoon as she completed an in tricate design on handmade lamp She calls her craft art on clay and had on display handpainted objects ranging from small thimbles to large vases and lamps She makes each object by hand paints the design on the clay and then adds glaze to create shiny protective finish Its an old and rather lost art she says Im told no one else is doing the same kind of work Im doing T0 paint lamp by hand takes as long as eight hours said Mrs Lane who sells her work to retail stores and also sells from her home in Zephyr near Uxbridge Shes been prac tising her craft professionally for year and half The arts and crafts show also featured the work of several photographers both from Barrie and from out of town Ital Johnston one of Barries best known color landscape photographers had an excellent display of work including several prints displayed at the public library earlier this year Also represented in the show was Eric Burnham of Barrie Terrace who displayed color photos taken in the Bar rie area and farther north in the Muskokas National Ballet
