CENTRE 7283440 WARNING LANGUAGE MAY BE OFFENSIVE Pro football takes beating By STEPHEN lAlTER Of The Examiner Professional American foot ball takes severe beating in North Dallas Forty at the Irri perial Like Slapshot the ex pose of hockey violence that came out few years ago the film uses the game as metaphor for society corrupt and violent and more concern ed with the figures on the bot tom line than the dignity of the players Cast as antihero of the film is Nick Note playing an injury ridden receiver who tries to play the game his own way Nolte has been so badly bat tered by football that he hasnt slept more than three hours at time for two years He drinks too much smokes too much and talks back to the coach But hes man who plays the game because he loves it despite bullying from coach 05 AiMITYVILLE ORROR who uses computers to plot win ning strategies and an owner who uses the team for self glorification CLICHES The film drags out the usual sports cliches neanderthal linebackers dressing room slapstick the players preoc cupation with sex drugs and booze but thos cliches ring true every time As the team prepares for an important championship game we see weeks worth of sweat pain and frustration Nolte is absolutely convincing hes physical actor who suits the role perfeot ly North Dallas Forty wisely spends most of its time off the playing field trying to give us glimpse of Noltes world and why man endures so much pain for brief moments of glory every Sunday lnterms of ac tion the film peaks with the championship game emo tionally it peaks with Noltes final confrontation with the coach and owner of the team As an expose the film scores points every time The actors are fine around including Mac Davis as Noltes quarterback buddy Charles Durning as the tyrannical coach and Bo Svenson as one of those neanderthal linebackers Ted Kotcheffs direction is brisk and efficient and the script strikes good balance between drama and comedy Io office opom pni
