cream of the crop the pick of the litter North Americas largest all breed outdoor dog show is right here in Barrie to be hosted at Molsons Park by the Barrie Kennel Club during Kempenfest Weekend August and Dog Show Chairman Dave Lamb explains that each day of the festival represents separate canine competition so the three day event becomes the Kennel Clubs 57th 58th and 59thshows With over 150 dog breeds represented Kennel Club members have put in nearly years work in preparing for the 3240 entrants to this massive competition Mr Lamb explains that dogs are not competing with each other but against set of stan dards outlined by canine ex perts across North America SIX IROUIS He says dog enthusiasts can enjoy purebreds in six different dog groups Specialty shows will be held within the massive event and include The Saluki Club Rhodesian Ridgebacks Great Pyrenees Canadian Bloodhound Black and Tan Coon Hound Bull Terrier and Airedale Terrier There will also be booster shows for eight other breeds The show involves all 28 the Kennel Clubs members and because their mandate pro liibits money making any pro fit by the club is donated to number of charitable sourcos Recipients of dog show pro cceds in he past include Royal Victoria llospital Cansave tario Society for Crippled Children and senior citizens homes Mr Lamb says the Kempenfest show is popular one because participants can camp on the site and socialize alter the day coifipelitions Judges for the threeday event include Bob Waters of British Columbia Mel Downing of Maryland Virginia Hampton of Pennsylvania Mildred Ileald of Indiana and Len Reece of Winnipeg The dog show is the Kennel Festival of Arts Kiwanis dream few thousand feet of snowfencing will appear in Centennial Park prior to Civic Holiday Weekend in August Parking barricades will ap pear and few thousand cars will be directed into parking areas during the busy August and weekend Food booths will appear on the horizon of Barries water front Miraculously coffee sand Wiches and hot dogs will be readied for hungry patrons These accomplishments are at the hands of the Kiwanis Club of Barrie whose members have been chiefly responsible for the smooth operation of the Huronia Festival of the Arts and Crafts The club which cooperated with the Barrie Chamber of Commerce to wed several local summer activities into the Kempentest banner few years ago has always been willing to buckle down and get things done as time draws near INITIAL FESTIVAL Kiwanis members were responsible for that initial festival in 1971 as they carried out dream by fellow member artist Ray Marshall The Kiwanis Club has been involved in every Kempenfest since per forming essentially the same duties with increasing exper tise as the years pass Dan Arnoldi Kiwanian and cochairman of this years art Kempenfes Dog Show XNM Clubs main annual activity in addition to informative meetings oroughout the year This is what the club is for We start right after elections in tober and it keeps rolling all year We promote purebred dogs and what dogs should be doing The team for 1980 is al ready to go says the 1979 chairman BUS SERVICE For the first time this year those attending the waterfront activities at Kempenfelt Bay will be able to enjoy the dog show without the hassle of mov ing their cars Half hourly trips on city bus will run from 10 am to pm free of charge The bus will leave the flagpole area at Centennial Park and run round trip to the Barrel House at Molsons Park Mr Lamb explains that each breed within group of breeds is judged in three categories males females and puppies Then champion dogs compete for the best of breed In each breed its possible to have 20 different contests winning dog can go on to best in group and then best in show he says With 150 breeds each of the three day competitions trophies themselves become highbudget operation costing good grooming will have this fellow looking his best for the Kempenfest Dog Show at Molsons fit Park August and An expected 3000 dogs will be entered in the mammoth show hundreds of dollars and the Kennel Club purchases the awards though Molsons Brewery generously donates nine cash awards over the threeday event Molsons gives $100 cash award for each days best in ON ALL NATIONAL BRANDS OF show winner $50 award for DOG CAT FOOD and $50 cash award for
