place to spend an evening of light enterv tainment on night when the lure of cottage life wears little thin To young aan eager theatre apprentice it is dream come true the first step on the road to stardom neon lights and standing ovations For the moment it is enough to have bit part in strawhat production in small place like people The boat costumes haul scenery paint props serve soft drinks at in termission and for the chance to say few lines into the foot lights The hours are long the pay is poor and the social life is non existent but its all worth it says 19yearold Alison Law rencc Miss Lawrence theatre stu dent at George Brown College in Toronto slogged it out be hind the scenes for four sum mers before eventually on it takes you right inside it Mulocks paintings are full of detail and intricate shadings of green leaves and branches yet hes not photorealistic who reproduces scene with camer Iike precision His work is softer and more subdued than reality love the feeling of woodlands says Mulock adore it The complexity of leaves fascinates me Mulock comes to art through background that emphasized science rather than painting In England where he was born he studied zoology and botany after moving to Canada in the early 19705 he studied art at Central Tech in Toronto but admits he was mgdiocre art student After finishing high school he went to work for the Royal Ontario Museum first as model maker and later as scientific illustrator He work ed for the TOM for six years before quitting last year to work as freelance illustrator and woodscape artist The museum illustration work taught him the im portance of careful observation and attention to detail two qualities that play vital role in the forest paintings The scenes he paints are as ac curate as he can make them right down to the positions of in dividual leaves and branches Most of the paintingsin the gallery show were completed during the past year Right Julian Mulock he loves the feeling of woodlands Examiner Photo now freelance illustrating for magazines like Owl Chickadee and The Canadian provide the money to support his painting Id like to be painter he says but thats still dream It will happen if do less it lustrating Mulock faces the classic dilemma of an illustrator sear ching for an audience for his art Hcs approached Toronto galleries to carry his paintings so far without success but there is possibility the McMichael Gallery in Klein burg will present show of his art Mulock displayed some of his paintings at the City Hall art show held in Toronto last month When he left the ROM Mulock says he thought he was Gods gift to illustration Hes since scaled down that claim although hes started getting requests to do US magazine covers as he strug gles to combine an art and an il lustration career His woodscapes show unique ap preciation of forest life sure ly that appreciation is the first step towards making his lream come true The show of woodscapes by Julian Mulock continues at the Barrie Art Club Gallery in The Downtown Centre until the end of August The artist will be at the gallery Saturday from to pm to meet the public LEVIS PLEATED PANTS COTTAGE
