mtgrtainment notes Gryphon gamble wise move By STEPHEN iAlIIlt It The Exmiuer Is the Gryphon Theatre trying to do too much this season Thats an obvious question to ask with the theatres deer sion this year to expand the summer season to yearround operation and also take prixiuction to Toronto Same Time Next Year SldlllllL lion Ilarron and Catherine McKinnon played for wwk in ltarrie and then moved to the Bayview Playhouse in Toronto for limited engagement that started Friday In Barrie the play drew mixed notices from local critics found llarroii and McKinnon gave uneven performances that SIITIpl didnt measure up to the standards expected from such pioles sional entertainers The Toronto reviews of the play were also timed and con sidering the Toronto critics reputation for ttltlllltpttl com ments both the Star and the Globe were restrained iii their criticisms of the play Part of the reason for that may he conscious decision not to take Same Time Nth Year as seriously as production by the Tarragon Theatre or Theatre Plus The Bernard Slade Cttllltd is such familiar play as seasonal as hayfeier was the way the tiltilies Itay onlogue phrased it that it almost seems superfluous to comment on it til course its too early to tell whether artistic director Vernon Chap mans gamble has paid off can understand why the play was taken to loronto and its clear that llitlltlll and McKinnon will attract audiences regardless of what the critics say But the pro duction carries the name of the iryphon Theatre along with it and the plays success or lack of it will reflect directly on the iryphon Thats all the more reason to ensure that any play going to Toronto is the very best that the Gryphon can offer In the case of Same Time Next Year dont think this is the case With the Iryphon facing the challenge of producing eight plays this season the decision to stretch the budget further for Toronto run seems questionable It may be prestigous to take lryphon show to Toronto but when the quality isnt there that prestige is pretty shortlived Short takes The entral ollegiate Band directed by Morley Calvert VERNON CHAPMAN entertainment Editor Stephen Gouer7266537
